Tri-Series Incoming: How Will the Hybrid Model Affect India- Pakistan, and the Tournament?

Is India vs Pakistan tri-series on the Cards?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) are working on a major initiative that could change the cricketing world. Former cricketer Rashid Latif confirmed this development shortly after the ICC decided on the 2025 Champions Trophy, with talks of a potential India-Pakistan tri-series now in the works. Is the India vs Pakistan tri-series on the cards?

This development marks a significant shift, as the two nations have not faced each other in bilateral series for over a decade, playing only in Asia Cups and ICC tournaments. The idea, which emerged during an ICC board meeting, is now under serious consideration, with the prospect of revitalizing cricketing ties between the archrivals.

The Hybrid Event Cycle

The ICC has finally resolved the long-standing issue over hosting the 2025 Champions Trophy. After long standstill negotiations, the board successfully persuaded the PCB to host the tournament in a hybrid model. For which in return, Pakistan will play its matches at a neutral venue during ICC events hosted by India.

This agreement has been confirmed for the tournament cycle from 2024-2027, with the Champions Trophy schedule expected to be revealed soon. The future of the event was uncertain after India refused to travel to Pakistan, but following numerous meetings, the issue has been resolved, allowing the tournament to proceed in the hybrid format.

Is the India-Pakistan Tri-Series Confirmed?

Reports from ESPNCricinfo have made us believe that, the ICC doesn’t oppose a tri-series between India, Pakistan, and another Asian full member, or even a quadrangular series with an associate member, provided it’s being held at a neutral venue. This series was part of the PCB’s demand following the hybrid model for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

As India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2013, the proposed multi-nation tournament would help reduce financial losses for both countries, with the majority of revenue shared between them. The ICC is keen to increase cricket between the nations due to its significant revenue potential. However, ICC has yet to officially announce the confirmation regarding the tri-series.
