Barbados Royals vs Guyana Amazon Warriors:
Match Summary
The Warriors entered this match on a hot streak. After reviving their campaign in front of their supporters when the competition relocated to Guyana.
They finished second in the league after winning four straight games at home, including a stunning victory over Barbados. Barbados, though, pulled off a masterful U-turn at the same location less than two days later to stop Guyana in its tracks.
Following a decisive victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the opening Qualifier on Tuesday. The Barbados Royals secured their spot in the CPL 2022 championship match. Azam Khan also hit a fifty before being bowled in the final over as Barbados put on a huge 195/5 after being put into bat.
Cornwall Mater class
The opening hitter Rahkeem Cornwall hit 11 sixes on his way to 91 off just 54 balls. After claiming the lead in the first half, Barbados went on to completely shred Guyana’s squad, bundling them out for just 108 in the pursuit.
The first blow came from Cornwall, who erupted with the bat for his first fifty of the competition after a succession of poor scores. The two of them gave Barbados an early advantage by hammering 55/0 in the Powerplay. His opening partner and skipper Kyle Mayers was likewise in great shape.
The hiccup
Following a couple of quick wickets lost to spin, Barbados started the partnership that led them to a large total. In just 51 balls, Azam Khan and Cornwall’s third-wicket stand produced 90 runs as he entered the field.
Guyana was pummelling by a barrage of sixes, the majority of which came from Cornwall, but Azam stepped up when his partner was removed and led Barbados to an impressive total of 195.
The End
The pursuit of Guyana quickly became impossible. During the first over, a beautiful inswinger from Mayers castled the in-form Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Then three more wickets fell during the PowerPlay to destroy them.
Ramon Simmonds, a superb left-arm pacer, smashed Hope, Shakib, and later Hetmyer, the only one to make it past 20.
The cherry on top came from Cornwall’s heroics with the ball, who also picked up a few wickets. Guyana advanced from 26/1 to 71/8 before being knocked out in the 18th over.
Cornwall’s Comments
Rahkeem Cornwall for his incredible 91 runs and two wickets received the Player of the Match award. After the match in the post-match interview, he stated “In the start, we wanted to give ourselves a chance to see how the pitch was going, we could always make up. I had my eye on the century, but happy with the 91 to put my team in a good position.”
“The way Simmonds bowled in the powerplay helped us get over the line. I still back myself with the ball, I am on the team as an all-rounder. We backed ourselves throughout, we had one bad game last time but we didn’t let that affect the team performance”.
What’s next ?
Guyana Amazon Warriors will have another chance to qualify for the final, however, as they will face Jamaica Tallawahs in the second qualifier tomorrow in a day-night match at the same site.
