It is another brewing rivalry in Asia. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have had some intense moments in the last few years. It all started with the fierce Nidahas Trophy game where Bangladesh players went overboard with their celebrations. The whole of the Sri Lankan audience came out in support for India in the finals against Bangladesh.

This fierce battle has added another dimension to the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka lost to Afghanistan in the opening game last season but they knocked Bangladesh out of the first round itself. The format was T20Is in that edition and Bangladesh have been a far better ODI side for some time now. It will be interesting to see how this battle unfolds in the 2023 Asia Cup.

BAN vs SL – Proven performers

#1 Liton Das

He was appointed as the captain of the ODI side immediately after Tamim Iqbal pulled out of the format. But BCB went ahead and appointed Shakib Al Hasan as the captain of the side till the World Cup. This is surely going to hurt Liton Das. He is someone who has played solid cricket over the past 12-18 months. Das can get off the blocks really quickly. He is someone who can put the opposition under the pump in the powerplay. Das has scored 5 centuries in 72 games and will look to add more to his kitty in the Asia Cup.

#2 Kusal Mendis

He has been Sri Lanka’s batting mainstay across formats. Kusal Mendis boasts of a terrific technique helping him adapt to different conditions and formats. He is someone who has a sound game against both pace and spin. Mendis is the vice-captain of the side and naturally there will be added responsibility on his shoulders. He has played 95 ODIs so far scoring 2,654 runs at an average of 35.56. Mendis has racked up 2 centuries and 20 fifties. He has got two big tournaments in front of him.

BAN vs SL – Players to watch out for

#1 Mehidy Hasan

He was the MVP in the series against India. Mehidy Hasan singlehandedly won the series for Bangladesh with his all round skills. He is someone who is always in the game either with bat or ball. Hasan the winner of the Player of the Tournament in 2016 U-19 World Cup will look to exert his worth in this tournament. The batters might not find it easy to go after Hasan. It will be fascinating to see how he goes about in this tournament.

#2 Dasun Shanaka

The Sri Lankan captain is one of the best finishers in the modern game. Dasun Shanaka has time and again helped Sri Lanka notch up victories from difficult positions. He is a key player in the lower middler order who often always ends up making a difference of 20-25 runs at the end. Shanaka will look to use the home advantage to good effect in the tournament. His success will have a say in Sri Lanka’s progress in the tournament.

BAN vs SL – Match prediction

Sri Lanka has seen plethora of injuries to its fast bowlers. They will be without their first-choice seam attack for the tournament. The absence of Wanindu Hasaranga weakens the side considerably. Bangladesh will look to exploit this facet and drive home the advantage when these two sides meet in the Asia Cup on August 31.
