In a short span of time, veteran Sri Lanka star Mahela Jayawardene has succeeded as a coach. He has won 3 Indian Premier League (IPL) titles with Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2017, 2019, and 2020, as well as the first The Hundred while coaching Southern Brave. It’s no surprise that Jayawardene’s coaching qualifications have risen to prominence. Here is Why Jayawardene Not Interested To Be As Head Coach.
Why Jayawardene Not Interested To Be As Head Coach
Prior to the establishment of cricket in Sri Lanka, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was received a better job by an international team in the future. Mahela, on the other hand, has stated that he is not willing to take on a full-time coaching position at this stage and would want to invest more time with his family.
The 44-year-old believes that a full-time job would require him to remain on the road for most of the year, something he does not want to do. He is, nevertheless, willing to serve as a specialist (for Sri Lanka). Mahela Jayawardene is now embracing the difficulties of coaching in the leagues and would like to maintain it that way.
“Having done 18 years of international cricket as a player I don’t want to live out of a suitcase for 12 months of the year. This is a good challenge for me and its early days. I don’t do too many tournaments so that I have my personal time to spend back home with the family. I’m happy to help out as a consultant here and there (with Sri Lanka) but not on a full-time basis because I would not enjoy that personally,” he said in an Interaction.
The Hundred was unfamiliar territory for everybody, and Mahela Jayawardene appreciated the opportunity to coach Southern Brave in the competition. A few regulations were changed to make it more interesting, and the former cricketer appreciated a few suggestions that he feels can be used in the T20 version in the next.
“I think you shouldn’t tinker too much, the product itself is pretty good. Personally, I love the new tactical onuses on two overs for a bowler, the new batsman has to come in and face, I think those kinds of things might even creep up to T20 cricket, even into World Cups”.
“It’s tactically good for the game, you’re not going away from the rules as such but when a bowler gets a wicket and rather than having the non-striker getting across, you have a new batsman to bowl at,” Mahela further added.
