England on Friday created history when they posted a monstrous 498 runs on board in their 50 overs campaign against Netherlands. In this article, we will look at the highest ODI scores in cricket history.
In the first match of the 3-match ODI series against Netherlands at Amstelveen, team England batters stunned everyone with their brilliant power hitting technique and outshined previous records to post highest score by a team in ODI cricket.

- South Africa 439/2 against West Indies
It was the day when Ab de Villiers destroyed the opponent with his power packed 49 ball 149 run knock, including 9 fours and 16 sixes with a strike rate of 338.63.
However, not just Ab both the openers Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw, also posted centuries with Hashim Amla remained not out at 153 runs. While Rossouw played a knock of 128.
Hashim and Rilee added 247 runs for the first wicket. When South Africa lost their 1 wicket they were at 237 in 38.3 overs. Then Ab de Villiers came on crease and stunned the bowlers. Both Amla and de Villiers then did 192 runs partnership in just 67 balls in a 50-over game.
Chasing a mammoth target of 440, West Indies only able to post 291 and lost the game by 148 runs.
- Sri Lanka 443/9 against Netherlands
In the first ODI of the 2-match series against Netherlands in 2006, Sri Lanka posted 443 on board in 50 overs.
The destructive opener Sanath Jayasuriya (157) and the new comer later turn legend Tilakratne Dilshan (117) also recorded century in the match to post a monstrous total in front of hosts.
After a solid batting performance by Sri Lankan batter, the bowlers of Sri Lanka also did a fantastic job and restricted Netherlands to just 248 and won the game by 195 runs.
- England 444/3 against Pakistan
On 30 August 2016, when Pakistan team was on tour of England, the English team posted 444 for 3 in 50 overs to give the visitors a tough time.
Alex Hales scored the highest run amongst England batters with 171 in 122 balls, while with the help of late power hitting by Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan, the hosts reach 444.
In reply, Pakistan only managed to score 275 and faced defeat by 169 runs.
- England 481/6 against Australia
On second, it is the team England again because of their heroics against the mighty Australia in the 3rd ODI of the 2018 Australia tour of England.
With the help of power packed knocks from Jonny Bairstow (139) and Alex Hales (147), the hosts recorded the highest total in ODI at the time.
Australia not just had a bad day with ball, they even failed to chase down the total or even reach somewhere close to mammoth total of 444 runs. They lost the game by a huge margin of 242 runs.
- England 498/4 against Netherlands
England breaked their own record on June 17, 2022 when they played the 1st ODI of the 3-match series against the neighbouring country Netherlands.
After losing opener Jason Roy at just 1, team England batters played the innings with a destructive approach and put 498 runs on board, just 2 short of 500.
Three batters, Phil Salt (122 of 93), Dawid Malan (125 off 109), and Jos Buttler (162 off 70) recorded centuries, while a late surge by Liam Livingstone (66 of 22) helped England beat their own set total of 481 to create a new record with 498. Both Malan and Livingstone remained not out.
In reply, Netherlands scored 266 and lost the game by 232 runs.
