Ricky Ponting is having a good time as the coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. The former Australian captain has turned down the opportunity to become England Cricket’s next coach. According to reports, Ricky Ponting refused the offer to become the new England coach and informed ECB Director of Cricket Rob Key that he is not interested in the position.
The 47-year-old former Australian captain is currently coaching the Delhi Capitals of the Indian Premier League. Rob Key had hoped Ponting would be enticed to combine that role with managing England’s white-ball teams.
Ottis Gibson has emerged as a possibility for the Check post, according to Sportsmail, with Key planning to divide the red-ball and white-ball responsibilities. Gibson, 53, has already coached two international teams – his native West Indies and South Africa – and was in charge of Bangladesh’s fast bowlers for two years until January.
During his second tenure as England’s fast-bowling coach, from 2015 to 2017, he has managed to build a strong connection with a number of senior players, having previously held the position between the years 2007 and 2010.
Nick Knight, who averaged 40 in 100 one-day matches for England, is one player who might be considered for the white-ball squad.
Gibson’s entry was well-received by Ben Stokes, who is Key’s first choice to succeed Joe Root as Test captain, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, and many other players are thought to have been disgruntled when he did not replace Trevor Bayliss as head coach in 2019. Chris Silverwood, who was fired earlier this year, was given the post as a replacement.
Although both he and former teammate Mahela Jayawardene – a contender for the white-ball role – enjoy a stable work-life balance and earn the majority of their teaching income from the IPL, Key is thought to be a fan of Sri Lankan icon Kumar Sangakkara.
Secret, on the other hand, is very optimistic that whoever takes over the white-ball spot would be selected from the IPL ranks, since the competitions should not interfere with England’s limited-overs contests. Ricky Ponting, the former Australian Test captain who is now the coach of the Delhi Capitals team, is at the top of Key’s wish list, but he may be difficult to entice.
In January of the year 2018, Ponting was named the new coach of the Delhi Daredevils of the Indian Premier League. The Delhi Daredevils finished last in the 2018 season of the IPL. Ponting aided in the development of young players such as Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant by fostering a fresh team atmosphere. The Delhi Capitals finished third in the 2019 season, a significant improvement over the previous season.
