On this day: England won the Ashes test in just 3 days

On this day, in 2015, England scripted history by winning the Ashes test in just 3 days.

The prestigious 5-match Ashes 2015 was on 1-1 level after the first 2 games, with third game to decide, which team will claim a confidence booster win to secure a lead in the series.

England won the first match played at Cardiff by a good margin of 169 runs. While Australia outlasted England at the home of cricket, Lord’s, in the second game by registering their third biggest win in the Ashes history (405 runs).

After winning the toss Australia opted to bat, but there decision turned out to be regretful as whole team bundled out for just 136 in the first innings. Apart from opener, Chris Rogers (52), no other batter showed any signs of fighting spirit as a result, the visitors didn’t even managed to cross 150-run mark.

For England, James Anderson took 6 wickets, while Stuart Broad and Steven Finn grabbed 2-2 each in the first innings.

In this battle, England posted 281, with the help of half centuries from Ian Bell, Joe Root and Moeen Ali, to claim a 145-run lead.

Australia in third innings, witnessed a similar kind of approach from their batters which they had in first innings as their middle order once again thrashed like cards and apart from David Warner (77), no other top order batter scored good runs, they didn’t even touched the double digit.

However, it was wicketkeeper Peter Nevill, who showed some courage and recorded a half century with Australia’s speedster also joined the half-centurion party to help visitors put a respectable 265 on board.

But a 121 target isn’t enough to restrict the English batters as they achieved the total with 8 wickets in hand to secure a lead in the series by 2-1.

Steven Finn was awarded player of the match for taking most wickets in the game (8), and specially his heroics in the second innings, where he broke the back of visitors by removing 6 batters.

England then claim victory in the fourth test as well, with fifth and the last one was won by Australia. The Ashes 2015 was won England by 3-2.
