Gujarat won games from positions where they had no business winning. But such has been Gujarat’s self-belief that has brought them this far. They won eight out of their first nine games. Gujarat came second against Punjab. Their dominance is such that despite losing against Punjab, they are four points clear of the second-placed side. Gujarat sits pretty with 16 points in their kitty.

The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians find themselves in an unfamiliar position. Never have they ever been at the bottom of the table before this season. But it has been such a strange season for MI. They lost 8 games on the trot. MI looked like had lost the art of winning. They lost games from winning positions. At times outplayed, at times out thought, it was a season where teams did to Mumbai what Mumbai had historically done to them.
With 8 losses in 8 games, MI’s season was as good as over. It was time for them to play freely. Mumbai stepped out on the field against RR in a changed manner. They put up an impressive bowling performance to restrict the Royals. MI despite stumbling in the chase went on to win the game. The win was more relief for the side who had got habituated to dominating. Mumbai will be looking to extend this habit as they have broken free.
The stakes:
It will be a clash between two teams who are perched across the extreme ends of the points table. Gujarat Titans are just one win away from staking a claim in the playoffs. Mumbai on the other hand will just be eager to get on the park and win a few more.
