Happy Birthday David Hussey: David Hussey, an Australian cricketer, is seen by many to be one of the team’s most underappreciated players. David made a name for himself as one of cricket’s most productive all-rounders. The athlete had flashes of grandeur at the beginning of his career by turning in a number of outstanding performances.
But with time, the Australian was unable to have the same influence on cricket as his older brother, Michael Hussey. But in several instances, the adaptable player came through for Australia.
On July 15, the veteran will be 45. Let’s take a look back at some of his courageous hits for Australia:
T20I score: 53 off 29 balls vs. Pakistan
In the 2010 T20 World Cup, David Hussey completely destroyed Pakistan’s bowling lineup. As they batted first on a challenging field, Australia lost David Warner and Michael Clarke. The Australian innings were then stabilized by an incredible 98-run partnership between Hussey and Shane Watson.
Hussey’s explosive performance, scoring 53 runs off just 29 balls, enabled Australia to score a total of 191, helping the team. The Pakistani team fell by 24 runs as the enormous total proved to be too much.
96 balls for 79 against New Zealand in an ODI
On February 10, 2009, David Hussey had his best ODI inning against New Zealand. The first team to bat was the Kiwis, who scored 244 points. As a result, the Australian top order broke down, and the Hussey brothers saved Australia.
For the fourth wicket, Michael and David forged a 115-run partnership. David, who is frequently praised for his power hitting, produced responsible innings of 79 runs off 96 deliveries to help the Kangaroos reach their goal with 6 wickets still to spare.
74 off 74 balls against Sri Lanka in an ODI
David contributed yet another heroic innings for the Australians in a critical League game of the renowned Commonwealth Bank series. Sri Lanka achieved 238 runs in the allotted 50 overs while batting first. The Australian batting order crumbled like a house of cards while attempting to reach a lofty score.
David rose to the occasion and amassed a respectable 74 runs before losing to Nuwan Kulasekara. David’s efforts came within seven runs of bringing Australia across the finish line.
111 from 83 balls against Scotland in an ODI
In the 2009 One Day International game between Australia and Scotland, Hussey scored his highest score ever. Hussey, who batted first, threw all he had at Scotland’s weak bowling attack.
The 44-year-astonishing old’s 111-run knock gave him his first century at the highest level. The all-valiant rounder’s efforts helped Australia win the match by a large margin of 189 runs and post a massive total of 345.
88 off 44 against South Africa in the T20I
On March 27, 2009, the unsung hero David Hussey faced South Africa and produced one of the finest innings of his career. David chose to launch a counterattack when Australia was down at 16/2 and completely destroyed the South African bowlers.
He contributed significantly to the scoring of 166 runs with a scorching unbroken knock of 88 runs at a striking rate of 200. In his stroke-filled inning, Hussey smashed six sixes in addition to five fours. But the Proteas were able to reach their goal with four wickets and four balls remaining. David Hussey was selected as the Player of the Match for his brilliant knock despite being on the losing team.
