Paddy Upton, a well-known mental conditioning coach who was on the support staff for India’s 2011 World Cup-winning side. He has returned to the national setup in preparation for the T20 World Cup in Australia.
Upton has been hired on a temporary basis and will be the newest member of coach Rahul Dravid’s support staff.
“Yes, Paddy will join the ODI team starting in the third ODI against the West Indies on Wednesday and will stay on until the completion of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Under the condition of anonymity, a senior BCCI source informed PTI that the agreement was just temporary and would last for four months.
When Gary Kirsten took over as head coach of the senior national team in 2008, he initially brought in Upton, and they enjoyed a productive working relationship up until 2011.
Upton has subsequently collaborated with Dravid at Rajasthan Royals and has ties to other IPL clubs.
It seems sensible for Dravid to sought Upton to get acquainted with his working style as it had been so successful for the Indian squad during the previous ten years.
Upton served as the Rajasthan Royals’ “team spark” in the previous IPL.
Since the 2013 Champions Trophy, India has failed to win an ICC trophy, hence the BCCI is doing all in its power to make sure the “Men in Blue” succeed in the international competition.
The BCCI had MS Dhoni serve as the event’s “Mentor” during the previous edition, but the decision didn’t work out as planned due to a worn-out team and an antiquated T20 strategy.
Could be a game-changer for Kohli. Virat Kohli, the current captain Rohit Sharma, veteran spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, and other players Upton has worked with throughout his time with Team India (between 2008 and 2011) are just a few. Upton collaborated with Yuzvendra Chahal and Prasidh Krishna while playing for the Rajasthan Royals.
There are requests for Kohli to be pulled from the shortest format due to a protracted slump, and it is anticipated that Upton may do some sessions with him.
The fact that Paddy has re-joined the Indian squad is fantastic. If you see Virat’s hitting, he doesn’t always appear out of shape; perhaps it’s all in his head. And who better than Paddy to blow out the cobwebs?” said a former India player who had previously worked with Upton.
