Buttler on Ireland Loss: The 2022 T20 World Cup has already produced some unexpected results and on Wednesday. That trend was extended at the MCG with Ireland’s five-run victory against England in a game plagued by rain.
Although there are no clear favorites in this type of game, England was picked to prevail in this one due to their recent form and overall strength. Jos Buttler, the team’s captain, believed that his team needed to use the disappointment of the unexpected loss as motivation to perform better in their remaining matches.
At the news conference following the game, Buttler stated, “I think we should let it hurt, to be honest.” “I believe that days like today are seriously, seriously discouraging, and you have to feel that. Saying that we should ignore it and move on serves no purpose.
“I think we need to think about it,” said the coach. “We need to do it quickly because we have a game right after, but today should hurt.”
The game was well-prepared for a thrilling conclusion when the weather took control. With England requiring 53 runs off of 33 balls, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone were on the field; the former in particular had fired off a barrage of strokes. Buttler opted against blaming the weather and supported the decision of the umpires to remove the players at that point.
It was becoming rather hefty.
We would have loved to continue and, if possible, try to hit a few sixes, but the going got tough. Before that, in my opinion, the game was already over. I believe that during the entire game, we fell far short of our goals, and Ireland deserved to win.”
England was consistently falling short of the DLS par score because of a lack of speed and frequent wickets, which was a result of Ireland’s strong start with the ball. Despite Moeen’s brief appearance, Andrew Balbirnie’s team made modest attempts to extend the clock during the final downpour since they were aware of the game’s circumstances. Buttler noticed something as well, but he didn’t appear to want to identify it.
“It’s definitely something, whether it’s play acting. I could slow down the game since I knew it was going to rain. Before that, I believe we had already forfeited the match. As I previously stated, we had everything working in our favour. They wouldn’t have slowed down the game if we were winning. Therefore, I believe that we should accept responsibility for our own actions and ensure that such a circumstance never arises.”
“Many of the seasoned cricketers in our team have suffered setbacks at various points in their careers, whether it was before the 2019 World Cup, in a franchise competition, or in international play. Guys who know how to handle strong emotions like today’s disappointment will no doubt be able to handle it. It serves no purpose to attempt to keep your feelings to yourself. You need to take care of those right now. We sort of move on from it tomorrow and anticipate the Australia game.”
