Will Rohit and Kohli Participate in Domestic Cricket?

Rohit and Kohli’s Ongoing Batting Form Issues

Rohit Sharma struggled to score just 31 runs across the five-match BGT Series, averaging a disappointing 6.20. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli who even scored a century in the Perth Test, failed to showcase that form in other matches due to constant dismissal issues.

The question now is whether Kohli and Rohit should play domestic cricket, and if so, which tournament would they participate in? The Vijay Hazare Trophy will be concluded soon.

Given team India’s upcoming series against England and the Champions Trophy, followed by the IPL starting March 14, the duo can opt to play in the Ranji Trophy starting January 23 before the ODIs.

Importance of Domestic Cricket

Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, and former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri have urged senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play domestic cricket to regain their lost form after India’s disappointing performance in the BGT Series against Australia. Shastri emphasized that fitness, batting form, and experience are key, they also stressed on players participation in domestic cricket when possible.

With a packed cricket calendar, including the upcoming ODI series and IPL, Kohli and Rohit have limited opportunities for first-class cricket.

Meanwhile, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting sympathized with Kohli’s batting struggles, connecting his poor form to a mental block. Ponting suggested Kohli might need a break from the game to rediscover his passion and overcome his challenges.

The decision is entirely up to the players and the staff about letting them play in domestic events or enhancing their form by monitoring them closely.
