Brian Lara has taken over as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2023 IPL season, succeeding Tom Moody. Lara was a strategic advisor and batting coach for the SRH club last season, and this will be his first assignment as the head coach of a T20 team. Here in this article, we talk about Sunrisers Hyderabad New Coach for IPL 2023.
It has been reported that Moody and the Sunrisers mutually agreed to part ways. Moody was recently appointed director of cricket at Desert Vipers, one of six franchises in the International League of Twenty20, which is set to debut in the UAE in January 2023.
Moody returned to the Sunrisers as director of cricket in 2021, replacing fellow Australian Trevor Bayliss as head coach. Following Bayliss left after a disastrous 2021 season in which the Sunrisers finished last with only three wins, the team named Moody as head coach for the second time. Moody helped Sunrisers reach the playoffs five times and win the IPL in his first term, which lasted from 2013 to 2019.
Moody’s second spell as head coach, however, was a flop: the Sunrisers finished eighth in the 10-team tournament in 2022, with six wins and eight losses. Sunrisers were the worst-performing team in the IPL in terms of wins over the last two seasons, with nine triumphs, 18 defeats, and one tie in 28 matches.
Moody would have been disappointed, given that the Sunrisers had formed a well-balanced squad at the auction, prior to which they had retained three players: captain Kane Williamson and the Indian duo of Umran Malik and Abdul Samad. Williamson got lucky at the toss in the opening half of the season, which helped the Sunrisers win five matches in a row. With five consecutive defeats, they slipped down the points table just as quickly. Sunrisers were upset by Williamson’s poor batting form, as well as injuries to two crucial Indian players, T Natarajan and Washington Sundar.
“It’s been a great journey and I wish them well,” said Moody after parting ways with the franchisee.
All other coaches, including Dale Steyn (fast bowling), Muttiah Muralitharan (spin bowling), and Hemang Badadni (fielding), have remained on the franchise’s coaching staff.
