For the first time since 2009, the Mumbai Indians failed to qualify for playoffs in two successive years (2021-22). They finished fifth on both of these occasions. It came as a rude shock for Mumbai who have 5 titles to their name. Mumbai became the second side after CSK to defend their title in 2020. They will be eager to return to winning ways in IPL 2023. MI started the decade on a high but have faltered since. They will push themselves to the hilt to win a record sixth title.
We look at the Mumbai Indians Strengths and Weakness in IPL 2023:
Mumbai Indians (MI) Strengths:
#1 A star-studded team
There is no dearth of stars in the Mumbai Indians camp. Be it an Indian or overseas bunch the list of superstars in MI is endless. They continued the legacy of signing new sensations in world cricket. MI bought Cameroon Green for a record price of INR 17.50 crores in IPL 2023 mini auctions. Jofra Archer, Tim David, and Dewald Brevis are superstars in their own right. If one of them gets going Mumbai won’t need much from the rest to win!
#2 A proven leader
Rohit Sharma is the only captain to win IPL titles. He is in fact the only player to win 6 IPL championships. Sharma is someone who knows the art of winning. It has been a difficult couple of seasons for Mumbai. But Sharma the captain will know it will just be a couple of wins to put their house in order.
#3 Brilliant young core In MI team
One of the main strengths of Mumbai is its talent scouting. The supply line for Mumbai Indians is endless. They keep churning out talent season after season. Dewald Brevis is a superstar is making. The signing of Tristan Stubbs was inspirational as he hadn’t proven himself in the international circuit then. Jofra Archer and Cameroon Green add a lot of muscle to the squad.
# Mumbai Indians (MI) Weakness
#1 Performing as a team
The one factor that has pegged back Mumbai in the last couple of seasons is their performance as a team. Mumbai’s batters have generally provided the runs but the bowlers have let the team down. On days when the bowlers have stepped up the batters have failed to rise to the occasion. MI need to come up with consistent team performances if they are to come back to winning ways.
#2 Mumbai Indians Bowling
Mumbai has struggled for control in bowling in the last couple of seasons. After a stupendous season in the UAE in 2020 when Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult ripped apart opponents with both new and old balls. But they have failed to replicate this in the last couple of seasons. MI doesn’t seem to have the bowling resources that could run through the opposition.
#3 Mumbai Indians Spinners
It has been one of the biggest Achilles heels for Mumbai ever since Harbhajan Singh was released from the squad. Rahul Chahar did a fair job for MI but even he was too released ahead of the mega auction. MI’s spin bowling options have failed to leave any sort of impact in the last two seasons. They have either lacked control or been defensive largely. MI couldn’t add much to the plate in the 2023 mini auctions either.
