The Lucknow Super Giants made an impressive debut in IPL 2022. They are the most expensive team in terms of the cost they were brought for. The KL Rahul-led side even topped the table once midway into the league stage. Rajat Patidar’s brilliance led to their ouster in the eliminator. LSG though presented a good account of themselves in the competition. They have tweaked a few of their armoury ahead of IPL 2023.
We look at LSG’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of IPL 2023:
# Strengths
#1 All-round options
LSG was one team that played four all-rounders in their playing XI last season. Their setup remains largely the same this time around despite few medications in resources. Deepak Hooda who had a breakthrough season last year has gone on to become an even better player post the IPL. Marcus Stoinis has been in scintillating form. Krunal Pandya, Kyle Mayers, Daniel Sams, and Romario Shepherd are all more than the sum of their parts.
#2 Indian pace bowling options
Avesh Khan was expected to lead LSG’s Indian pace bowling mantle last season. But it was Mohsin Khan who left everyone in awe with his sizzling performance. The tall left-arm seamer troubled the best batsmen in the business. He clocked good space and hit uncomfortable lengths to keep the batters in check. The pair is easily among the best young Indian pace duo in the competition. Jaydev Unadkat’s addition brings in experience around Indian pace bowling.
#3 Dynamic batting keepers
There is no team that boasts of quality wicketkeeping batters as LSG does. They have three world-class wicket-keeping batters in their ranks. KL Rahul the captain is a high-class opening batter who could keep wickets. Quinton De Kock is the frontline wicketkeeping option who provides the team with blazing starts. LSG acquired another wicketkeeper batter in the mini-auction. Nicholas Pooran is expected to boost LSG in the middle overs and provide the finishing touch.
# Weakness
#1 Injury concerns
LSG’s main concern would be injuries to a few of its star players. Their overseas pace sensation Mark Wood is injury prone. There is a lot of doubt surrounding his participation in the entire event. Mohsin Khan too has been under the injury scanner post last season’s IPL. LSG could field their best XI only if their front-line players are injury free.
#2 The captain
There has been growing chatter around KL Rahul the player. It is argued that his safety first game doesn’t sync well with the modern demands of the format. Rahul has repeatedly mentioned how he doesn’t care about high strike rates. In a format that has assumed greater significance of impact over volume, Rahul remains a curious case. LSG’s success/failure will be proportional to its captain’s mindset.
#3 The winning mindset
LSG last season won most of their games batting first. The side was able to post competitive scores and defend them successfully. But they had a relatively low win percentage while chasing. LSG lacked the winning mentality to seal chases. They need to overcome the mental barrier if they are to have a successful IPL 2023.
