Elite cricketers often tend to think that they are bigger than the sport itself. They take their success for granted and let out unnecessary statements. These statements border on arrogance. Cricketers get carried away. The statements that they let out are distasteful. StumpsandBails looks at 5 such Arrogant Statements Made By Cricketers.
Let’s look at 5 Such Arrogant Statements by Cricketers
#5 Harbhajan Singh: Taking a dig at Ashwin
Harbhajan Singh has often always been skeptical about Ravichandran Ashwin’s meteoric rise in world cricket. Ashwin was sensational in India’s home run in 2016-17. Singh posted a cryptic tweet questioning Ashwin’s abilities and undermining his skill.
He tweeted saying, “Only 2 in my 103 Tests. Kumble and my Test wicket count would have been something else if we got wickets like last 4 years we playing on.”
#4 Ravichandran Ashwin: I was blessed with an ethical mind not to fix games
Ravichandran Ashwin is known for his quick wit and banter. But he once took his humor too far and shocked fans. Ashwin had shared a post regarding a footwear brand. Herschelle Gibbs took a dig at Ashwin stating he hoped these shoes would help Ashwin to run fast.
Ashwin took offense to Gibbs’s statement and retorted strongly saying, “…I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.” Ashwin later went on to delete those tweets but his response was enough for people to take note of.
#3 Marlon Samuels: Give me 14 days with your wife
The former WI batsmen let out a derogatory rant against English all-rounder Ben Stokes. He went to the extent of dragging Stokes’s wife into this! Stokes while interacting with an IPL podcast had stated that he wouldn’t even want his worst enemy to undergo a 14-day quarantine. The Royals’ allrounder maintained that he wouldn’t wish quarantine on even Marlon Samuels (his nemesis) as the quarantine is that bad and tough.
But unsurprisingly Samuels took offense to this statement. He put up Instagram stories stating, “No white boy could diss me in the sports and no get back diss look at this b*tch still thinking about me give me 14 days with you wife turn har into Jamaican in 14 seconds mate none of yall know me that simply means it’s my f***ing superior skin tone (sic).” The entire cricketing fraternity came down heavily on Samuels for using such derogatory language.
#2 Gautam Gambhir: Kohli should consider himself to be lucky
Gautam Gambhir post his altercation with Virat Kohli in IPL 2013 has never had kind words for Kohli. He came down heavily on Kohli’s captaincy ahead of IPL 2019. He was quoted saying, “I don’t see him as a shrewd captain. I don’t see him as a tactful captain [tactician]. And he hasn’t won the IPL. So ultimately, a captain is only as good as his record. There are people who have won the trophy three times, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. So I think he has a long way to go.”
Gambhir went on to add that, “You cannot compare him to someone like Rohit or Dhoni at this stage because he has been part of RCB, and captaining RCB for the last seven to eight years, and he has been very lucky and should be thanking the franchise that they stuck with him because not many captains have got such a long rope where they haven’t won a tournament.”
#1 Mushfiqur Rahim openly celebrating India’s semi-final loss
This incident was one of the most hated events in recent cricketing history. India had knocked out Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup in 2016. But they suffered a heartbreaking loss to West Indies in the semi-finals. Bangladesh wicket-keeper and senior player celebrated India’s defeat with a distasteful tweet. He posted, “Happiness is this…!!! Ha ha ha…!!! India lost in the semifinal.” Rahim later deleted the tweet after he received widespread criticism for this post.
