The Australian star All-rounder, known for his hard-hitting scoring abilities, Glenn Maxwell who is a 2-time ODI World Cup champion, announced he will be retiring from the ODI format, after having made a 13-year wonderful career in this format. Maxwell debuted against Afghanistan in 2012, he played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs with a batting average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. Besides his world-class scoring abilities, he also took 77 wickets with his effective off-spin and made 91 catches in the ODI format. Maxwell discussed his future with Australian Chair of Selectors George Bailey who is also his former captain, revealing he doesn’t expect to play until the 2027 World Cup.  

He emphasized the importance of letting younger players step up and earn their place, rather than holding on selfishly when he is no longer at his peak form. Maxwell was a phenomenal player in Australia’s ODI World Cup triumphs in 2015 and 2023. His unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 tournament, achieved despite severe cramps, remains one of the most memorable innings in World Cup history. Maxwell’s retirement from ODIs marks the end of an era for Australian cricket.

Replacing Glenn Maxwell would be a pivotal task for Australia, as Maxwell has emphasised his place being given to younger talent who can develop and achieve great results in the format.
