Can India win the fourth test against England?

The fourth Test match at Old Trafford, Manchester (July 23-27, 2025), sees India trailing 1-2 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Despite a spirited fight, injuries and England’s resurgence pose challenges. Can India win the fourth test against England?

India and Their Crisis-Hit Squad

India’s campaign has been rocked by injuries, with key pacers Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, and Akash Deep ruled out for the fourth Test. Rishabh Pant, battling a fractured toe, heroically batted on Day 2, scoring a fifty despite limited mobility, but he’s unlikely to keep wickets or play the fifth Test. This forces India to rely on debutant Anshul Kamboj and possibly Prasidh Krishna, alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

The batting lineup, led by Shubman Gill, showed promise with Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and Sai Sudharsan (61) contributing to India’s 358. However, the loss of wickets late on Day 1, coupled with Pant’s injury, left India at 264/4, vulnerable to England’s potent bowling attack led by Ben Stokes (5-72) and Jofra Archer (3-73).

India’s bowling struggled to find the right length on a pace-friendly pitch, allowing England to close Day 2 at 225/2. To win, India must rally their depleted bowling unit, with Bumrah’s leadership and Ravindra Jadeja’s spin crucial to contain England’s deep batting order.

England and Their Dominance

England hold the upper hand, leading 2-1 after a thrilling 22-run win at Lord’s. Their openers, Ben Duckett (94) and Zak Crawley (84), capitalized on India’s bowling errors, forging a 166-run stand at 5.18 runs per over. Stokes’ all-round brilliance, including a five-wicket haul, and Archer’s fiery pace have tilted the momentum. Joe Root, nearing a historic run-scoring milestone, anchors a formidable batting lineup extending to No. 10.

The Old Trafford pitch, known for pace and bounce, suits England’s aggressive “Bazball” approach, though rain forecasts may disrupt play. England’s ability to exploit India’s injury-weakened squad gives them a 52% win probability, but India’s resilience could still challenge their dominance if they seize early wickets
