Cricket West Indies president Ricky Skerritt promises a “thorough postmortem” following the team’s early elimination from the 2022 T20 World Cup. According to him, the two-time winners’ elimination from the tournament in Australia in the first round was due to their poor shot selection and inability to handle spin. Here in this article, we have discussed How did West Indies fail in T20 World Cup 2022 in detail.
How did West Indies fail in T20 World Cup 2022?
The team were bowled out for just 118 in their opening match of this edition when chasing 161 against Scotland. They won their second match against Zimbabwe. However, Ireland handily defeated their 146 for 5 on Friday to advance. In all three of their games, West Indies shown a noticeable inability to counter spin throughout the middle overs.
In a statement, Skerritt said. “I am deeply upset with the performance results of our team in Australia. I appreciate the sense of utter frustration that is experience by many. The ongoing inability of our batsmen to prevail over opposing slow bowling continued. It turns out to be an obvious weakness in Australia, and untimely shot selections seem to be deeply embed in the T20 batting culture of our senior team.”
“Unprofessional” Batting
Brandon King’s unbeaten 62 off 48 balls was the only shining moment of their innings against Ireland. In comparison, Ireland’s first six over of their chase had six fours and four sixes. West Indies’ top scorer against Zimbabwe was Johnson Charles, who took King’s place since he was sick at the time. Only four other West Indies batters reached double digits against Scotland, in what coach Phil Simmons called an “unprofessional” performance.
What Skerritt Said
“I want to assure stakeholders that a thorough postmortem will carry out on all aspects of our World Cup preparation. Performance and solutions will be there in keeping with CWI’s strategy to improve the quality and sustainability of cricket on all fronts, and in all formats.
“West Indies cricket is bigger than any one individual or event and continues to need the input and support of all stakeholders.”
Coach’s Explanation for Poor Performance
Coach Phil Simmons appeared in front of the media following their elimination and emphasized that he was pleased with the team’s pre-event training.
“We’ve worked hard. We’ve prepared well. It’s just on the day, we haven’t done the correct things. We haven’t assessed the situation properly of the day and done what’s necessary for the situation. I don’t think there was disrespect on our part. We prepared like if we were playing anyone else.”
He ended up with emphasizing on the need for fundamental changes that the team needs to bring into the structure.
“We’ve got to go back and look at our structure. How we play the game and make sure that when we come to competitions. And when we play in bilateral series we are ready. We will able to do what’s necessary for each situation of the game.”
As part of the World Test Championship, the West Indies will play two Test matches when they next compete on the international stage in Australia.
