Who Could Captain SRH: The Sunrisers Hyderabad made a bold call of retaining Kane Williamson as their first-choice player last year. They had to let go of Rashid Khan who was visibly upset at the snub. SRH believed in Williamson’s leadership and batting at the top of the order. But a bad season with the bat and a moderate season in captaincy has left SRH with no choice but to look beyond him.
Hence it came as no surprise that Williamson who was retained for INR 14 crores was released. It will be interesting to see who will now captain the franchise in the coming season.
We look at possible choices who could lead SRH:
#4 Abhishek Sharma
He was one of the breakout stars of IPL 2022. Abhishek Sharma showcased his potential while opening the batting. He looked at ease facing both pace and spin. Sharma currently captains the Punjab side in domestic tournaments. He is someone who is akin to leadership. Brian Lara the SRH mentor has worked closely with Sharma in the last season.
The duo could form a potent combination that could serve the franchise for seasons to come. All eyes will be on SRH if they are willing to gamble on such a left-field choice. IPL has thrown enough examples of how young leaders have shaped the franchise’s future. This could be another step in that direction.
#3 Aiden Markram
He is one of the leading batters in T20 cricket. Aiden Markram had a fine season with SRH last year. He was one of their most promising players who left an impression. Markram is a U-19 World Cup-winning captain. He is someone who knows the art of winning a major tournament.
SRH could do well by entrusting the responsibility to Markram of leading the franchise. His calmness on and off the field will have a soothing effect on players across the board. He could certainly be an X-factor leader provided SRH looks in his direction.
#2 Mayank Agarwal
He was appointed the captain of Punjab Kings last year amidst much hype. Mayank Agarwal to his credit displayed great tactical acumen on various occasions. He appeared unperturbed in the most demanding of situations. But an ordinary season with the bat undid all his good work as a leader. The Kings wasted no time in shredding him off captaincy. They went on to release him as a player too.
Agarwal who is one of the most consistent openers in IPL has every right to feel hard done. He will walk into the auctions knowing fully well that there is a franchise that needs not just an opener but a leader as well. Agarwal fits both bills to perfection.
#1 Ben Stokes
His stocks have risen rapidly in the last couple of weeks. A double World Cup winner, Ben Stokes showed the world what he brings to a side. Despite his meagre numbers in T20 cricket, Stokes remains a highly invaluable player. He is one of those rare cricketers who could change the game with any of the three disciplines.
Stokes is a proven leader of men. He revitalized the England Test team in a matter of months. Stokes is the tonic that can transform SRH into a dangerous unit. SRH, with their mighty purse, will head into the auction waiting to acquire Stokes no matter what the price. It could well and truly be a winning proposition for both parties.
