Cheteshwar Pujara is very far from his finest in recent years. The right-handed hitter, who was known for hitting long balls, has struggled to deliver regularly. Despite getting several starts, Pujara hasn’t made a Test century since his 193 versus Australia in January 2019. He has received a great deal of backlash as a result of this. VVS Laxman Admits Pujara’s Century Drought
On Day 3 of the 2nd Test versus New Zealand in Mumbai on Sunday, the right-handed hitter was out for 47, prolonging his run of 42 innings with a Test tonne (December 5). Following a duck in the 1st innings, Pujara began the batting in India’s 2nd innings and looked excellent during his stint at the crease. Although he appeared to be on his way to a huge score, left-arm bowler Ajaz Patel ended his innings.
With young players like Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer performing admirably, many spectators and analysts have disputed Pujara’s place in the XI. Speaking on the subject, legendary Indian batsman VVS Laxman stated that Pujara’s struggle to transform his beginnings into three-figure scores is a major concern for Team India.
We saw quite consistently when India played England: Laxman
“Yes, it’s definitely a worry. Because the batting position Pujara usually bats is No. 3. You usually get a lot more opportunities (to score hundreds) than when you’re batting at No. 5 or No. 6. Also, this is the type of dismissal that we saw quite consistently when India played England,” Laxman told in an interaction.
“Jack Leach got Pujara out 2 or 3 times in this fashion. The way he approached his defensive shot, the angle of the bat, he was not able to cover the turn. On this wicket, it’s important to cover the turn and be behind the line and the angle of the bat was not straight. That’s why the ball was carried to Ross Taylor,” he added.
Laxman also remarked that the continual criticism may be frustrating for Pujara. “It’s about people talking about that and it can get frustrating. The quicker you get to the 3-figure mark, then everyone will stop talking and then you can go out and do your business with a very, very free mind,” he added.
