Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) came into existence in 2013 post the exit of Deccan Chargers. Since then, they have been one of the most consistent teams in the IPL. They have qualified for playoffs every time since 2015. SRH even went on to win the title in 2016. They have been served by few high-quality players over the years. But in IPL auction sunrisers hyderabad there have been few players who SRH couldn’t sign owing to their high price in the auctions.
StumpsandBails looks at 5 such players whom SRH failed to sign despite wanting to buy them:
5 players SRH should target
#5 Krishnappa Gowtham
Krishnappa Gowtham was a hot pick in 2021 IPL auctions. The fact that Gowtham can tonk big sixes at the end overs wasn’t lost on any team. Gowtham is a street smart T20 spinner. He had shown his cricketing smarts in the 2018 IPL season. SRH were keen to rope in Gowtham, as he would have shored up their lower middler-order and could have been a handy off-spin option. Gowtham could have been a like-for-like replacement to Mohammad Nabi. But at INR 9.4 crores, SRH couldn’t really push for him and CSK acquired him in the auctions.
#4 Evin Lewis
Evin Lewis had a tremendous reputation in 2018. He could put the attack on the sword. Lewis had kept his base price to INR 1.5 crores. SRH entered into the bidding war with MI for Lewis. MI eventually signed Lewis for INR 3.8 crores. It must be said that SRH did inflate Lewis’s value in the auctions.
#3 Glenn Maxwell
The 2018 mega auctions were the place where SRH made most of its big bets. Glenn Maxwell was one such player whom SRH had on their Wishlist. They so dearly wanted an overseas allrounder to look after their fragile middle-order. The signing of Maxwell would have been ideal but unfortunately, they couldn’t get hold of him. Delhi Capitals managed to buy Maxwell for INR 9 crores in the auction.
#2 Jofra Archer could have been playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL
SRH wanted Jofra Archer! It would have been such a fantastic proposition to see Archer teaming up with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan. Archer who was on the Wishlist for many teams was hot property during the 2018 auctions. He had kept his base price at a very meagre INR 40 lakhs. But his final price escalated by 18 times. RR acquired Archer for INR 7.2 crores outbidding SRH.
#1 KL Rahul could have returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL auction 2018
The biggest signing SRH missed out on in the 2018 auctions was KL Rahul. They went all out to acquire him in the auctions. Rahul had established himself as India’s number 1 T20 batsman in the format back then. He would have been a big signing for any team. It was widely expected that Rahul will fetch a double-digit price in the auctions. SRH kept fighting for Rahul but eventually withdrew at INR 10.50 crores. The Punjab team bought Rahul for INR 11 crores. SRH later had to settle for Manish Pandey. The fact that they shelled out INR 11 crores for him too changed their team dynamics forever.
