Test cricket is the most difficult format. It is the ultimate test for every cricketer. Players who are able to excel in Tests are the ones who are remembered forever. The first session of the Test is where the batsmen face their biggest challenge. It boils down to the best batsmen to stand tall and be counted. The greatest Test batsmen are the ones who make their starts count. They capitalize on tiring bowlers and an old ball. These batsmen go on to score big centuries. There have been few innings that have gone on to redefine Test cricket. Let’s look at Players with the Most Triple Centuries In Test Cricket
Players With Most Triple Centuries In Test Cricket
#4 Chris Gayle
Christopher Henry Gayle is unarguably the best batsman in T20I cricket. He has gone on to scale newer heights in the game’s shortest format. But even then the jersey number that Gayle sports across formats is 333. This isn’t any normal number. It is Gayle’s highest score in Test cricket. Not many will be aware of his exploits in the red ball game. But Gayle is a legitimate Test match veteran.
He is one of those rare batsmen to have scored 2 triple centuries. His first triple-century knock came against South Africa in 2005. He scored 317 and that knock comprised 37 boundaries and 3 sixes. He followed it up with another triple century. This innings came against Sri Lanka in 2010. He scored 333 and that remains his highest Test score.
#3 Brian Lara
Brian Charles Lara remains one of the finest entertainers of the game. His dazzling stroke play was a visceral delight. Lara singlehandedly carried the burden of the entire West Indies team. He scored runs in breathtaking fashion. Lara mixed caution and aggression beautifully. He held the record for the highest run score in an innings for the longest time. Matthew Hayden briefly broke this record but Lara took over that record almost immediately. It has been 17 years and Lara’s 400* remains untouched.
Lara’s both triple centuries came against England. The first knock of 375 was registered in 1994. He went on to better himself 10 years later at Antigua. Lara scored an epic 400 and remains the only batsman to have hit that magical number.
#2 Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag was a trendsetter. He completely changed the dynamics of Test cricket with his batting. Sehwag’s strike rate was a mind-boggling 82 in Tests. He often ended up scoring a century in a single session. It was quite evident with his approach that he will probably be the first Indian to score a triple century and he rightly did just that.
Sehwag scored his first triple century against Pakistan in Multan in 2004. His knock of 309 is etched in public memory. Sehwag went one better against South Africa in 2008 scoring 319. He narrowly missed out on a third triple century when he was dismissed for 293 against Sri Lanka. He would have been the only batsman to have achieved the milestone. But Sehwag didn’t care much about numbers any which way.
#1 Don Bradman
Sir Donald Bradman remains one of the most iconic figures in the game. He was the pioneer of run-making in Test cricket. His batting average of 99.94 is the stuff of legend. Bradman’s consistency is unmatchable to date. He scored 29 centuries in just 52 Tests. Sir Don was the first batsman to hit two triple centuries. His first triple ton came in 1930 wherein he scored 304. He went on to score 334 in 1934. Bradman’s next highest Test score was 299*. This makes him the top player on this list.
