Tony Mann, a former Australian leg-spinner all-rounder, has been passed away at the age of 74 after a seven-year fight with pancreatic cancer. He is the only second-night watchman to score a century in Tests. Tony Mann scored 189 runs for Australia in four tests and also picked up four wickets.
Mann represented Western Australia 76 times during his career of 24 years. Tony Mann was a brilliant fieldsman, hard-hitting batsman, and leg-spinner.
For WA, Mann bagged 200 wickets while scoring 2544 runs including 2 centuries and 11 half-centuries. He also played in 13 List A games and picked up 5 wickets and scored 162 runs.
Kevin Roberts, the chief executive of Cricket Australia, said ” We are deeply saddened to learn of Tony’s passing. Tony was a strong contributor to the local community in Western Australia and Australian Cricket generally. He was an excellent allrounder – a left-hand bat and leg-spin bowler – through four Tests and 80 first-class matches. ”
” Many fondly remember him for his feats in the 1977-78 Perth Test against India when he became only the second man to score a century as a night watchman. On behalf of the entire Australian cricket family, we send our condolences to Tony’s family,” Kevin Roberts added.
