The Ahmedabad team has kept a low profile up until now. Now that their paperwork is finalized they are expected to make rapid progress. They are likely to pick 3 players from the draft. #4 Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes has already been the most expensive player in an auction. He twice achieved this feat and that too in consecutive years (2017-18). Stokes won the MVP in his debut IPL season playing for Pune. He later represented the Royals from 2018 up until this season.
But injuries and dip in form meant that the Royals couldn’t afford to retain him. Stokes will now be available in the auctions. There will be little surprise if he again sets the cash registers ringing in the auctions. Stokes’s attitude is his biggest asset. Ahmedabad will be tempted to appoint him as captain.
#3 Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer is one of the more underrated IPL captains. He metamorphosed a stagnant Delhi team. Iyer was handed Delhi’s captaincy midway in 2018. The team was in shambles in just the first season of a 4-year cycle. Iyer credibly led the side and along with Ricky Ponting took Delhi to the playoffs in 2019. They went one better in 2020 when they made the finals for the first time.
But an untimely injury ahead of the 2021 season, ruled him out of the first leg of the season. DC handed Rishabh Pant the captaincy job and strangely didn’t hand it back to Iyer once he was fit for the 2nd leg. Iyer had every right to feel short-changed. He has left the Delhi terrain for greener pastures. Ahmedabad sure will have their eyes on this man.
#2 Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya was arguably the best Indian all-rounder until the last couple of seasons. He picked up crucial wickets with the ball while being an absolute beast with the bat. Pandya took down attacks at will. He even performed the role of a specialist batter to perfection in 2020.
But an off-colour season in 2021 saw him fall out of favours. Pandya will be available for other teams to pouch. There isn’t an iota of doubt that he will be paid a huge sum for his all-around services. Pandya brings in the local flavour, his captaincy stint might be a huge hit.
#1 David Warner
David Warner is arguably one of the big names who has been released ahead of the auctions. Warner is an IPL legend. He has been a proven performer for SRH in all seasons barring the last one. Warner led to IPL glory almost singlehandedly in 2016.
He finished with 848 runs that season, 2nd highest that season. Apart from this, he thrice won the orange cap. There is little that Warner didn’t do with SRH and for them. But his sacking came as a big shock for the fans. Ahmedabad will have a hungry Warner in their mind for captaincy.
