Celebrated Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has backed the BCCI’s proposition of reprogramming the abolished 5th Test between India and England, which was scheduled to be played at Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday. Sunil Gavaskar reminded everyone of England’s grand gesture to return back to India, to resume the halted series with the Men in Blue which was altered midway due to the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008. Here you can know what Gavaskar Speaks On ENG vs IND 5th Test.
Gavaskar Speaks On ENG vs IND 5th Test
India and England were supposed to play the fifth and final Test of their ongoing series on 10th September. However, the event was canceled as a staff of the Indian national team was reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. As per reports, the Indian players were resistant to play the Test match, fearing it might lead to a 10-day quarantine in England.
The isolation of the Indian players would have directly resulted in the rescheduling of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is set to begin on 19th September in the UAE. Nevertheless, both BCCI and England Cricket Board (ECB) have released a statement announcing a possible rescheduling of a one-off game. However, nothing is official for now. India are leading the 5-match series 2-1 for now.
Sunil Gavaskar has applauded BCCI’s move to consider a one-off game to complete the series. “Yes, I think that (rescheduling the canceled Test) would be the correct thing to do. Look, we, in India, should never forget what the England team did in 2008 after the horrific attack, the 26/11. They came back,” Gavaskar told the official broadcaster of the series Sony Sports. “They would have been perfectly entitled to say ‘we don’t feel safe. We are not coming back.”
“So, we should never forget that Kevin Pietersen led the team and he was the main man. If KP had said ‘no I don’t want to go’ that would have been the end of the tour. It was because KP convinced the others that the team came and we had that fantastic Test match in Chennai where India chased down 380 on Day 5 to win,” Gavaskar said on Sony Sports Network.
