A Punjab-born Right-handed Batsman, Shubman Gill is one of the brightest young talents for India who is often seen as the future of Indian cricket. Gill was the vice-captain of the Indian team in the Under-19 World Cup in 2018 and emerged as the player of the tournament. Shubman was a part of the Indian Test team for 2 years. However, due to tough competition in the team for the opening slot, he missed on few tours recently. Shubman started playing cricket at a very young age of 4. His father also wanted to be a cricketer but wasn’t able to fulfill his dream due to family responsibilities, after seeing talent in his son, he decided an encouraged Shubman to make Cricket his life. To provide better cricketing opportunities to Shubman, he shifted to Mohali near PCA stadium. He did his early schooling in Manav Mangal Smart School in Mohali.

Shubman started playing in the stadium and later got selected in Under-16 team of Punjab at the age of 11 years. He scored 330 runs in 5 matches in his debut series on the district level. In an Under-16 Inter-district tournament, Shubman smashed 351 runs and created a world record of opening partnership of 587 runs. In 2014, in his first Under-16 state level match, Shubman scored a double century. In the same year, Gill was awarded by BCCI with M.A Chidambaram Trophy for the most Successful Under-16 player of the year.

After giving magnificent performances on the district and state level, Shubman got selected in Punjab senior team where in 2017, he made his debut in Vijay Hazare Trophy against Vidarbha.

On 17 November 2017, Shubman made his first-class debut in a Ranji Trophy match for Punjab. In his second match, he scored in maiden first-class century against Services and then against Bengal in his third match.

In 2018, Shubman got selected in the Deodhar Trophy for India C where he scored a century and helped his team in reaching to the finals of the tournament. In the same year, he smashed his maiden first-class double century against Tamil Nadu. Later in the season, he smashed 148 runs off 154 runs in the fourth innings of the match and led his team to victory single-handedly against Hyderabad. By the end of 2018, Shubman scored 990 runs in just 8 matches of Ranji Trophy.

In 2018-19 Ranji season, Shubman scored 728 runs in just 5 matches and ended up as the leading run scorer for his side.

Shubman was appointed as the captain of India Blue in 2019 Duleep Trophy tournament and then for India C in Deodhar Trophy. He became the youngest player ever to lead a team in the tournament at the age of 20 years 57 days. He broke the 10-year old record of Virat Kohli.

In February 2017, Shubman was picked up in the Indian Under-19 squad for the series against England. He was the part of the Under-19 team that created history in England by winning the series. Later in December 2017, he got selected for Under-19 World Cup and was named as the vice-captain of the Indian team. He emerged as the leading run-getter in the tournament for India and was also awarded with player of the tournament. He was also awarded with the rising star of the tournament by ICC after the tournament.

After getting a fame in domestic circuit, Gill was included in the ODI series against New Zealand. On 31 Januray 2019, Shubman Gill made his international debut against New Zealand at Hamilton.

In August 2019, he was included in India A team for a tour of West Indies where he smashed a double century and became the youngest Indian batter to achieve the record.

Shubman got picked up in the Indian squad in February 2020 against New Zealand but didn’t get a chance to play any match. Gill made his test debut against Australia in December 2020 and scored 91 runs in the last test of the series. He played an important role for India in winning the series.

After getting named as the player of the tournament in Under-19 World Cup, Shubman Gill was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in the mega auction of 2018 IPL for a whopping amount of 1.8 crores. He played 13 matches in his debut season and scored 203 runs with 1 half century.

In 2019, he scored 296 runs with 3 half centuries. After 2 average seasons, Gill performed well in 2020 and smashed 440 runs in 14 matches with 3 half centuries and continued to perform well in the next season. He was released by KKR after 2021 season.
