It hasn’t helped Root’s cause that he hardly plays competitive T20 cricket. But he wanted to play IPL 2023 as it would help him for the ODI World Cup scheduled later next year.

They opened the innings together not so long ago for the national team. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are childhood friends. They know each other’s game inside out. Both Rahul and Agarwal formed a potent combo at Punjab. Agarwal’s audaciousness gelled well with Rahul’s safety-first approach. But earlier this year Rahul moved to Lucknow. Agarwal was named the captain of Punjab.

There is arguably no one else in world cricket apart from Ben Stokes at the moment who could do that. Stokes along with coach Brendon McCullum has revived England’s flagging fortunes in no time. He could just be the right candidate to transform an insipid SRH side.
