The participation of foreign players in IPL has become doubtful after the government has issued fresh restrictions on visas in the wake of coronavirus threat as even the BCCI is uncertain about the fate of the IPL.
The cricket governing body has said that it will decide about its next course of action in a couple of days after the government issued new restrictions on all visas except diplomatic and employment, till April 15th due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Nearly 63 foreign players are supposed to take part in IPL and the cricket body said it is unaware whether the visas of these players stand suspended.
It is also said that playing the matches in empty stadiums is an option but concrete decisions will be taken only at the league’s Governing Council meeting that will take place on March 14th.
India has reported 60 cases of Corona infections until now. The government announced, “All existing visas, except diplomatic, official, UN/International organizations, employment and project visas, stand suspended till 15th April 2020. This will come into effect from 1200GMT on 13th March 2020 at the port of departure.”
The Madras High Court is set to hear regarding the happening of IPL. As the Maharashtra government might likely bar the matches, the only solution is to have the matches played in empty stadiums as this will save the broadcasters from losing advertisement money.
