On the10th June 1986- 24 years ago, India won the first Test match at the legendary Lord’s cricket ground against the team of England. What many Indian cricket teams couldn’t do for 54 years, the Kapil Dev-leading cricket team was able to create the historic moment. In the year 1932, at Lord’s, India played its first Test match but it took a long time for the Indian side to taste the success.
In that Test match, Kapil Dev, then captain of team India was the superstar. He took five wickets- four wickets in the second match and on the last day of the Test match, he made unbeaten 23 runs when India needs to register a five-wicket win. On 5th June was the starting day of the Test match and 10th June was the final day as the 8th June was a rest day.
After winning the toss, India chose to field first. England team scored mere 294 runs as Chetan Sharma claimed five wickets. In that match, Graham Gooch for team England became the top scorer by making 114 runs.
In the first innings, team India managed to take 47 runs lead after scoring 341 runs by the help of 126 runs of Dilip Vengsarkar in 213 balls.
In the second innings, Maninder Singh and captain Kapil Dev spelled magic with the ball. They took three and four wickets respectively. Their heroic performances enabled the Indian team to bundled out the England team for just 180 runs, giving a target of 134 runs to register a victory.
On the last day, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri made unbeaten 23 and 20 runs respectively and led the Indian team to a historic five-wicket win.
After then, India has played 7 numbers of Test matches at Lord’s and won in the year 2014 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. In that match, Ishant Sharma awarded the Player of the Match because of his seven-wickets haul on the final day and team India defeated England by 95 runs.
At Lord’s, India has played 18 Test matches and has won only twice. For 12 times, the visitors have concluded on the losing side while the Test match ended in a draw four times.
