Captain Eoin Morgan ‘s decision after winning the toss to bat first did not go down well during the 39th game of the ongoing 13th season of the Indian Premier League, between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi, after his team was limited to 84/8 in 20 overs.
It all began with Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Mohammed Siraj becoming the first-ever bowler in an IPL match to bowl a few maiden overs. Siraj made early inroads to the point that the opposition could not recover, having dismissed the likes of Rahul Tripathi (1), Nitish Rana (0) and Shubman Gill (1) in his first two overs.
In the powerplay, with Kolkata also losing Tom Banton (10) to Navdeep Saini, Morgan and wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik were responsible for stitching a huge rescue act. With the senior couple getting their eye in, as far as the run rate was concerned, they never really got moving. Karthik (4) getting out to Yuzvendra Chahal again meant that even before the halfway stage, his team had lost half its batsmen.
Morgan top-scored with his 30 (34) for KKR before getting out in the 16th over, but the same meant nothing with regard to his team scoring a competitive total.
Although Siraj was the Royal Challengers ‘pick of the bowlers with 4-2-8-3 bowling figures, Chahal was second-best with his 4-0-15-2 figures, including Karthik and Pat Cummins’ wickets (4).
