The IPL 2022 mega auction was a much-awaited event. This auction has the potential to build teams for the entire decade. Teams will look to build further from the core group of players they identify. These players will be the fulcrum of their teams. The IPL mega auction in that respect was expected to serve as a level playing field. Teams walked into the mega auctions having picked a minimum of 2 players already. Four of the ten teams had already retained 4 players from their squad. The auction threw up pretty interesting results. Here we have discussed IPL All Team Win Percentage.
IPL All Team Win Percentage
#10 Kolkata Knight Riders [20%]
Kolkata’s auction activities ended the moment they picked Shreyas Iyer and Pat Cummins or so they thought. They were consumed in the glory of bringing in two superstars that they clearly got carried away. Shubman Gill, who was one of the pillars of the side was released ahead of the auctions. KKR tried to narrow that gap by acquiring Ajinkya Rahane. These purchases didn’t make cricketing logic. KKR desperately needed a world-class keeper but they didn’t even try to bid for Jonny Bairstow or Nicholas Pooran. They settled for Sam Billings and Sheldon Jackson as their keepers. The squad doesn’t look like the one that made it to the finals last year. We predict their chances of winning at a mere 20%.
#9 Gujarat Titans [25%]
The new team, Gujarat Titans, seemed pretty aloof in the auctions. Their inexperience clearly showed clearly in the crunch moments of the mega auction. They remained actively passive for the large parts of the auction. Gujarat had picked Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill from the players draft. These picks indicated that they have made some smart choices.
But their auction strategy was pretty below par. They don’t seem to have a solid top-order.
Their team balance is entirely dependent on the fact if Hardik Pandya bowls. Captaincy in itself will be a new kettle of fish for Hardik. On top of that having a team that revolves around you might prove to be too big a task. We peg our probability meter at 25% for Gujarat. They score more than KKR because of the presence of few genuine T20 match-winners.
#8 Sunrisers Hyderabad [30%]
Hyderabad is one team that knows the art of winning the trophy. But they parted ways with the man who led them to the title. SRH has not been the same team post the David Warner episode. They made strange retentions and were even stranger on day 1 of the auctions. It was only on day 2 that they went into some serious damage control mode. SRH prised out players like Aiden Markram, Rahul Tripathi, Nicholas Pooran to bolster their batting order. The team has a lot of unproven young talent. SRH has taken a huge leap of faith considering this is a mega auction. We predict their winning chances at 30%.
#7 Royal Challengers Bangalore [35%]
RCB is one team that has forever remained the bridesmaid. They made to the finals on three occasions but yet emerged on the losing side. RCB did manage to resist buying high-profile players in the auction. The purchase of Faf Du Plessis and Josh Hazlewood immediately makes RCB a better side. The re-signing of Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel adds more muscle to the team. RCB could well have added a couple more impactful signings especially to their Indian batting core. This factor may again come back to haunt the side. We predict 35% winning chances for RCB.
#6 Rajasthan Royals [40%]
The Rajasthan Royals had a forgettable couple of seasons in 2020 and 2021. They desperately needed to reboot their squad. The Royals have managed to do just that in this mega auction. They made their intentions quite clear when they signed up R. Ashwin and later Yuzvendra Chahal. RR added Prasidh Krishna, Trent Boult to their mix to strengthen their bowling unit. They acquired Shimron Hetmyer to add explosiveness in their middle-order.
RR has a balanced squad if only they could have added more meat to number 6 and number 7 position. This is an area where RR have struggled post the Shane Warne-Rahul Dravid era. They seem to have forgotten the art of winning big matches. Hence we predict their winning chances to be limited to 40%.
#5 Chennai Super Kings [45%]
CSK’s squad barely has the look of a defending champion. To their credit they did try hard to retain the XI that featured in the IPL final. They succeeded to a large extent but missed out on three key players. CSK were forced to make few selection calls that lacked conviction. Apart from the signing of Deepak Chahar, there was hardly any inspirational signing. CSK have tried to retain the template that earned them success but they seem to be lacking the personnel who could execute it perfectly. But they are one team who have repeatedly proved their critics wrong. Hence we predict a winning chance of 45% for them.
#4 Punjab Kings [50%]
The Punjab Kings certainly were a team possessed in the auctions. They were the ones who set the ball rolling with the signing of Shikhar Dhawan. Punjab soon added Kagiso Rabada to the mix. They strengthened their squad with the hiring of Jonny Bairstow. Punjab’s starting overseas four of Bairstow, Rabada, Liam Livingstone, and Odean Smith is arguably the best in the competition. The only spot left for discussion is the captaincy. None of the squad members look an automatic captaincy choice. This area may again hurt Punjab despite boasting a gun side. We peg their chances at 50%.
#3 Mumbai Indians [55%]
There is no denying the fact that the five-time champions had a forgettable mega auction. It is in shark contrast to how they operate in the auctions. Mumbai though seemed to be contend with the team they ended up buying. They were adamant on acquiring 3-4 players which they achieved in stunning style. MI’s big ticket purchases were Ishan Kishan, Jofra Archer (2023 onwards), and Tim David. MI’s team balance sports a lengthy tail and lacks explosive Indian finishers. They will bank on their proven individual stars to overcome the odds. Mumbai has a captain that has led them to five IPL titles. We rate their chances at 55% for this major reason.
#2 Lucknow Super Giants [60%]
The Lucknow team has made an outstanding debut in the IPL Auctions. They seem to have had a clear plan. Lucknow were focused to fill the team with allrounders. The fact that they managed to do so speaks volumes about their auction strategy. The signings of Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Jason Holder in addition to Marcus Stoinis is a step in that direction. These players have the capability of taking the side all the way. If they are led well, LSG can surely be a team to watch out for, not just this year, but for years to come. We predict their chance of winning at 60%.
#1 Delhi Capitals [65%]
Ever since Delhi Capitals rechristened themselves, their fortunes has been on the ascendancy. Delhi reinforced their favourites tag with a splendid performance in the mega auctions. Delhi signing David Warner pairs him up with Prithvi Shaw. This combination is pure box-office. Their top-order is not just fearsome but mighty effective.
Delhi can play Mitchell Marsh at 3, Rishabh Pant at 4, and Rovman Powell at 5. Delhi top-lined their auctions by acquiring Shardul Thakur. His inclusion adds a different dimension to the squad. Pant, the full-time captain will be liberated with the absence of Shreyas Iyer. Warner, a proven IPL captain will be a great sounding board to young Pant. The future looks shining bright for this franchise! We predict their chances of winning the highest at 65%.
