The Indian Premier League has witnessed many records. The first day of the IPL saw a record-storming century from Brendon McCullum. Kolkata posted a total of 222 that Chennai surpassed the very next day scoring 246. This record stood for long until Bangalore registered a total of 263 in 2013.
There have been many individual records too that have been broken several times over the years. But there have been a few records that look impossible to be surmounted.
We look at 5 such IPL records that will be almost impossible to break:
#5 Best bowling figures in an IPL innings
Mumbai Indians were defending a below-par score against Sunrisers Hyderabad at their home ground. They had just posted 136 runs batting first. MI were looking for inspiration and it came in the form of Alzarri Joseph. The tall West Indian fast bowler then went on to bowl one of the most sensational spells of IPL. His figures read 6-12 that restricted SRH to just 96. It looks improbable that someone might pip Joseph’s record again in the IPL.
#4 Chris Gayle’s 175*
Chris Gayle in 2013 was on a record-breaking spree. Gayle smashed 733 runs winning the orange cap for that season. He became the first batsman to win the orange cap consecutively in two successive years. But what made his season special was Gayle’s astonishing feat where he smashed 175* against Pune at Bengaluru. He reached his century off just 30 balls. It remains the highest score in IPL.
#3 Most number of wickets taken by an uncapped bowler
Harshal Patel has had a dream IPL season. RCB had traded Harshal Patel from Delhi prior to the beginning of this season. He was called upon to handle RCB’s death bowling woes. Patel answered RCB’s call splendidly. He picked up a five-wicket haul and a hattrick against defending champions, Mumbai. Patel bagged 32 wickets overall equalling Dwayne Bravo’s record albeit in fewer games and at a better average. It looks highly unlikely that an uncapped bowler may go past the 30-wicket mark ever again in the IPL.
#2 Partnership of 229* runs
There isn’t any better sight in IPL than watching Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers batting together. The duo have made batting look beautiful on so many occasions. They have been RCB’s biggest assets over the years. Kohli and ABD went on a rampage in 2016 against Gujarat Lions. They both notched up individual hundreds during their epic partnership of 229*. It has been 5 years since and nobody has come close to break this record.
#1 Virat Kohli’s 4 centuries in a single season
Virat Kohli had a mind-numbing season in 2016. He posted 973 runs taking his team singlehandedly to the finals. Kohli during this season smashed 4 centuries along the way. In one of the games, Kohli hit a ton inside 15 overs. He was injured with 15 stitches but put went on to put on a stellar show. In a format where batsmen fail to score a century despite playing hundreds of games, Kohli smashed 4 centuries in just 16 games.
