The defending champions of the Vivo Indian premier league are struggling to score runs this season. MI have batted first in each of their first four games this season but have failed to score a 160+ total on any occasions. They have lost 2 games while defending the total and won the rest 2. They are currently 4th in the points table with 4 points to their name.

IPL 2021: Why are Mumbai Indians struggling with their bat?

#1 The pitch
Mumbai Indians have played all their four matches in the M.A. Chidambaram stadium so far. The pitch in Chennai is known for its low scoring totals. It favours the spinners and makes it difficult for the batsmen to go big.
#2 Hardik Pandya’s poor form
The hard hitter of Mumbai Indians is currently struggling to connect the ball to his bat. He has scored 13, 15, 7 and 0 in the first 4 games for MI. The defending champions are used to Pandya scoring a quick 40 of 15 balls whenever needed, they are surely missing that this year.
#3 Failure of Middle-order
Skipper Rohit Sharma pointed out this huge problem in his post-match interview after their win against SRH. Sharma stated that the middle-order batsmen will have to show up. MI’s batsmen are falling like a house of cards in every game. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, including Hardik Pandya have failed to put the necessary runs for MI this season.
