Former Australian Spinner Shane Warne called Joe Root tactics horrifying on how he used the tactics against the Indian tail-enders. India managed to add 106 runs from their tail-enders and from there it all went wrong for the English side. England was given a 272-run target in a minimum of 60 overs on the last day. And the hosts could not achieve that target and lost by 151 runs on Monday. Here is Shane Warne About Joe Root Tactics.
Shane Warne About Joe Root Tactics
Shane Warne felt that England bowlers were clueless on how to get Indian bowlers out. Moeen Ali was hammered by Shami continuously where he managed to score 56 runs at Lord’s cricket ground.
England were favourites to win the match before day 5 started but after the fall of Rishabh Pant, England thought tail-enders will go for an aggressive approach. When Root brought speedster Mark Wood into the attack – fielders were set back on the rope and seemingly attempted to bounce out tail-enders. But Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami partnership came as a surprise to everyone and both the bowlers have turned the match around with the bat.
In a recent interview, Shane Warne said – “They’re (England cricketers) standing there scratching their heads saying, ‘what went wrong?’ and what went wrong was horrific tactics, They (England) had five, six, seven fielders on the fence. The bowler is standing at the top of his mark looking around saying, ‘how am I going to get some of these guys out?
“They got a bit too emotional, a bit too much short stuff and in the end, the best team won, and that was India,” said Warne.
Root too agreed how Bumrah and Shami’s partnership changed the match in India’s favour. “The (Shami and Bumrah partnership) was the pivotal moment of the game, without question, and I don’t think I dealt with that well enough tactically. It put us in a difficult position”
KL Rahul was named as the player of the match as his centurion knock set up India for the rest of the sessions. India takes a 1-0 lead in the 5 match test series and the 3rd test will be played at Leeds starting from 25th August.
