Pakistan faced Australia in the 2nd semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup, and the men in green were defeated by Australia by 5 wickets. All seemed to be going well for them until some powerful hitting late in the game by Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis transformed Australia’s prospects. Furthermore, Pakistan Prime Minister and former captain Imran Khan praised his squad for a successful effort this time around.
Khan turned to Twitter to strengthen his team’s spirit, stating that he understands their emotions because in the past he has been in their situations. The Pakistan squad, on the other hand, should be happy with the type of cricket they played in the 2021 T20 World Cup, the former captain backed.
“To Babar Azam & the team: I know exactly how all of you are feeling right now because I have faced similar disappointments on the cricket field. But you should all be proud of the quality of cricket you played & the humility you showed in your wins. Congratulations Team Australia,” tweeted Khan.
Pakistan batted first and set a goal of 177 runs for Aaron Finch and his team to chase. Everything was going Pakistan’s way until the final two overs. 22 runs were required in the final 2 overs, and Hasan Ali made the most costly slip when he missed Wade of Afridi in the 19th over, and the batter wasted no time in smashing 3 successive sixes to push Australia through to the final.
“I thought we scored as many runs as we had planned in the first innings. I think if we give such teams a chance in the back end, it is going to be costly. The turning point was that dropped catch. Had we taken it, the scenario could have been different. The way we gelled and played the entire tournament, I am satisfied as a captain. Hopefully, we’ll learn from this for the next tournament,” said Babar Azam after the match.
