BCCI secretary Jay Shah has hinted that cricket is getting closer to get involved in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. BCCI and ECB have been working on including cricket and the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s has proposed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include cricket in the list of sports. Cricket’s Inclusion In 2028 Olympics
Jay Shah has given a verdict on Cricket’s participation in the 2028 Olympics and said – “Once cricket is added in the Olympics, India will be participating. The BCCI and the ICC are on the same page as far as participation in the Olympics is concerned,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told.
There was only one game played in 1900 between Great Britain and France. Since that, Cricket is completely ignored by the Olympics. A BCCI official was also quoted saying that the cricket board, government, and the Olympic committee are all working together in tandem.
“The BCCI is more than happy to work together with the government and help increase India’s medal chances,” a BCCI official said.
Reports are suggesting that the top 8 teams of Cricket from men and women will be included in Olympics. Apart from the Olympics, Cricket will be included in the Commonwealth Games and Asain games too. Commonwealth will be started in Birmingham, July 2022 while Asain games to be started from September 2022.
It is yet to be decided which format of the game will be played in the Olympics. Currently, reports say that it will be mostly a T20 game or the Hundred format which is currently played in England.
Cricket will receive a bigger platform after competing in bigger tournaments like the Olympics and it will be recognized by more countries. India has won 7 medals in Tokyo 2020 Olympics with 1 Gold, 2 Silver, and 4 Bronze Medals. It has been a progressive Olympics for us and the inclusion of Cricket will increase our chances of winning more gold medals.
