West Indies didn’t get off to a good start after opting to bat first, as they were bowled out for 152 (45.1 overs). The lone bright spot in the hosts’ dreadful batting display was Evin Lewis. With 5 fours and 3 huge sixes, the left-hander remained undefeated after scoring 55 runs off 66 balls.
Shai Hope, Kieran Pollard (C), and Darren Bravo all reached double figures, and yet none of them were able to transform their beginnings. Mitchell Starc continued to dominate for Australia, picking up 3-wickets in crucial situations. Each of Josh Hazlewood, Ashton Agar, and Adam Zampa took 2-wickets.
The Australians were off to a bad start as well, with left-arm spinner Akeal Hosen dismissing both starters, Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques, in quick sequence. Following that, a crucial 38-run partnership between captain Alex Carey as well as Mitchell Marsh revived the session for the visitors.
Despite Carey’s 35 runs, Marsh added 29. With 19.3 overs remaining, Matthew Wade selected the offensive path and guided the Australians over the end of the stage. With 5 fours and 2-sixes, the lefty remained not out on 51 (52).
The Commitment That These Guys Showed Was Great To See: Carey
Agar stepped in with a decent 33-ball 19-runs. Kieron Pollard was unhappy after the West Indies’ defeat. He slammed the hitters for their disappointing performance. On the other side, Carey, the Australian captain, was delighted.
“Obviously, we didn’t bat well. Yes, the wicket was a bit tacky but not losing early wickets was the key. Not getting partnerships is what has been haunting us for a while. If we had got a 220 score on that pitch, it could have been different,” Pollard said in a conversation after the match.
“Personally, and collectively, it’s exciting (to win a series). It’s tough leaving home in a pandemic. The commitment that these guys showed was great to see and getting a result in our favour was great. The T20s didn’t go our way but it’s nice to see some reward for our commitment,” Carey said.
