Former Team India opener Gautam Gambhir, who has played two IPL (Indian Premier League) seasons consecutively for the Team Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals in his career, is reportedly all set to purchase stakes of the Delhi Capitals Team. The southpaw is said to have started talks with the GMR group, who already have a 50% stake in the capital’s franchise, for co-ownership.
Gambhir Looking Forward To Buying Stakes Of Delhi Capitals:
Gambhir is said to have reached an agreement during his negotiations with the GMR Group, and the deal will await clearance from the IPL governing council before a final decision is taken. The former cricketer is reportedly eyeing a 10% stake, for which he would need to pay a huge amount of money of around Rs 100 crore.
The other half of the 50% stake of the franchise has been purchased by the JSW group who had become the co-owners last year after paying an amount of around Rs 550 crore. JSW Group was instrumental in changing the name of the IPL team from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals, which saw instant success and achievements, with the team reaching an impressive third position in the IPL 12.
Sources told The Times of India that a formal declaration of the same will be made once the agreement is signed between all the involved groups. “The matter has been discussed for the last few months and it is only a matter of few days,” the source added.
Gambhir might have seen and enjoyed most success as a player with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) player in the IPL but Delhi is his hometown. Although the team didn’t witness much success under the captaincy of Gambhir when he left for KKR to join them a couple of seasons ago, Delhi would hope that the association with their former team player might help the team achieve greater heights of success.
As Ravichandran Ashwin has been added to the roster already, the Delhi Capitals would look to create an even better team than the one in the last season as they move towards Kolkata for the IPL 2020 Auction on December 19.
