The 2002 Champions Trophy was the third edition of the tournament. It was held in Sri Lanka from 12th September to 30th September that year.
The tournament was renamed as Champions Trophy from ICC Knockout Tournament from this year.
Twelve teams participated in the tournament. 10 teams out the 12 were Test-playing nations and the remaining teams were Kenya and Netherlands.
The 12 teams were divided into 4 pools with 3 teams in each pool. The tournament was a round-robin tournament, unlike the first two editions.
In the pool stage, each country played with the remaining two teams in each pool. The top team of each pool would advance to the semi-final stage.
Australia, Bangladesh, and New Zealand were placed in Pool 1. England Zimbabwe and India were in Pool 2. Kenya, South Africa, and West Indies were part of Pool 3. Pool 4 consisted of Netherlands Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Pool Stage
The first match of the Pool Stage took place between hosts Sri Lanka and Pakistan on September 12th. Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 8 wickets.
In the second pool match, South Africa won against West Indies by 2 wickets. The final scores of the teams were West Indies- 238/8 in 50 overs and South Africa-242/8 in 49 overs.
India played Zimbabwe in the third match. India won the match by 14 runs. Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif (111) and Zimbabwe star batsman Andy Flower (145) made centuries. The final scores were India-288/6 in 50 overs and Zimbabwe 274/8 in 50 overs.
Australia beat New Zealand in the 4th match by 164 runs. Mc Grath took 5 wickets for 37 runs in the match. Final scores Australia-296/7 in 50 overs New Zealand -132 all out in 26.2 overs.
In the next match, Sri Lanka beat the Netherlands by 206 runs. Sri Lankan Atapattu scored 101 runs. Final scores Sri Lanka 292/6 in 50 overs Netherlands 86 all out in 29.3 overs. Muralidharan picked up 5 wickets for 15 runs.
West Indies in their second match beat Kenya by 29 runs. Lara(111) scored a century. Kenya batsman Steve Tikolo scored 93 runs. Final scores West Indies-261/6 Kenya 232/10 in 49.1 overs.
England defeated Zimbabwe in another match by 108 runs. English batsman Trescothick (119) made a century. Final scores England-298/8 Zimbabwe-109/9 in 48 overs. Zimbabwe was cut two overs for a slow run rate.
Australia defeated Bangladesh by 9 wickets in their next match Aussie bowler Gillespie took 3 wickets. Final score Bangladesh 129/10 in 45.2 overs Australia-133/1 in 20.4 overs.
South Africa drubbed Kenya in their next match. South African batsman Gibbs made century(116). Final scores South Africa-316/5 Kenya-140 all out in 46.5 overs.
Pakistan in their next match trashed the Netherlands by 9 wickets. Final scores Netherlands 136 all out in 50 overs Pakistan-142/1 in 16.2 overs.
India met England in its second pool match. England which batted first made 269 runs in 50 overs for the loss of 7 wickets. India chased the target in just 39.3 overs. Indian destructive batsman scored 126 runs in 104 balls. Final scores England-269/7 India-271/2 in 39.3 overs.
In the final pool match, New Zealand beat Bangladesh by 167 runs. NZ blower Shane Bond took 4 wickets for 21 runs. Final scores New Zealand-244/9 Bangladesh-77 all out in 19.3 overs.
By the end of the pool matches, 4 teams that qualified for semis were India, Sri Lanka, Australia, and South Africa.
Semi-finals
In the first semi-final, India and South Africa met. India batted first and made 261 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. South Africa looked like it was going to chase the target comfortably as it was in a strong position with the score being 192/1 in 37 overs with Gibbs (116) and Jacques Kallis (97) at the crease.
Gibbs retired due to heat exhaustion at that stage and SA’s batting line up collapsed. They scored 251 runs for the loss of 6 wickets by the end of 50 overs.
Sehwag who weaved magic with his bowling and took 3 wickets in the final moments of the match was awarded Man of The Match award. India won the match by 10 runs and entered finals.
In the second semi-final hosts, Sri Lanka defeated Australia by 7 wickets. Australia which batted first were all out for a low score of 162 in 48.4 overs. Lanka batsmen chased the target in 40 overs won the match and qualified for the final.
Muttiah Muralidharan bagged 3 wickets. Star batsman Aravinda de Silva who conceded only 16 runs in 10 0vers and got Matthew Hayden wicket was given Man of The Match award.
Finals
On 29th September India and Sri Lanka played against each other in the final. Lanka which batted first scored 244 runs in 50 overs for the loss of 5 wickets.
India which came to bat afterward made 14 runs in 2 overs without any loss before the match was washed out due to heavy rain.
On the next day, September 30th which was a reserve day both the teams again met for the finals, which was a new match.
Sri Lanka again batted first scoring 222 runs for 7 wickets in 50 overs. Jayawardane scored 77 runs for Sri Lanka.
India which came to bat second made 38 runs in 8.4 overs before the rain again came and washed out the match.
As the matched was abandoned twice both India and Sri Lanka were declared as co-winners.
It was the first Champions Trophy win for both India and Sri Lanka.
