IPL 2022 was a great platform for players to test themselves before the T20 World Cup 2022. The mega auctions preceding the IPL changed the fortunes of many cricketers. Owing to the demand and supply nature of the auctions, few cricketers end up getting overpaid. Their sky-high price at times doesn’t justify what they bring to the table.
There is constant pressure on these players to deliver big. But few of them wither under the spotlight. IPL 2022 was no different. Few expensive players had a mixed season and failed to impress national selectors for the T20 World Cup.
We look at 5 such expensive IPL players who couldn’t make it to the World Cup:
#5 Avesh Khan (INR 10 crores)
He was one of the constants in the team right since he made his T20I debut earlier this year. But despite getting plenty of chances, Avesh Khan failed to win the faith of the national selection committee. He conceded runs at more than 9 per over game after game. His economy at the death was a big concern.
Add to the return of bowling mainstays, khan’s exclusion never really came as a surprise. He was bought for INR 10 crores in the auction but that couldn’t warranty him a spot in the T20 World Cup.
#4 Shardul Thakur (INR 10.75 crores)
He was part of the T20 World Cup squad last year. But he couldn’t quite make the cut this year. His below-par showing in the last edition has proven to be costly. Shardul Thakur since then hasn’t been part of India’s T20I plans. The Delhi Capitals had acquired Thakur for a whopping INR 10.75 crores. But his T20 credentials weren’t impressive enough for him to garner attention.
#3 Shreyas Iyer (INR 12.25 crores)
He was one of the big ticket signings this season. Kolkata was quite keen on picking a leader in the auction. They got what they wanted in Shreyas Iyer. He was coming off a fine season ahead of the IPL. Iyer had won the player of the series award against Sri Lanka right before the IPL. But it has all been downhill for the batsmen since. His persistent problem against the short-ball has cost him a spot in the World Cup squad.
#2 Deepak Chahar (INR 14 crores)
He couldn’t have had a more untimely injury than this. Deepak Chahar pulled up his hamstring ahead of the IPL. He could have been a fine prospect considering his skills. But all he could manage was a spot as a standby. CSK were affected owing to his injury as they had shelled a mammoth INR 14 crores on him. Chahar, though, is a frontrunner to replace any bowler, if they get happen to suffer any injury.
#1 Ishan Kishan (INR 15.25 crores)
He was the hottest property in the mega auctions. Ishan Kishan had so much going for him in the mega auctions. He was touted to be a complete package. Kishan is an opening keeper-batsman, a combination that is rare in the international circuit leave alone the IPL. All these factors led to him being the most expensive signing of IPL 2022 (INR 15.25 crores).
But the price tag pressure showed on Kishan. He wasn’t his natural self this season. Kishan failed to make the most of the opportunities that arrived post the IPL. He is nowhere in the reckoning for T20 World Cup selection.
