Greg Barclay, cricket chairman of New Zealand has said that a decision regarding the Women’s World Cup 2021 will be taken in the next two weeks.
On Monday (20-07-2020), International Cricket Council (ICC) said that the 2021 Women’s World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in New Zealand from 6th February to 7th March is still on schedule despite the COVID-19 pandemic threat. After the announcement of ICC, New Zealand Cricket Chairman Greg Barclay’s comments came.
However, the International Cricket Council was forced to defer the Men’s T20 World Cup, which was scheduled to be taken place in Australia in October- November.
Greg Barclay Statement:
Barclay said to Radio New Zealand “The important decision regarding the ODI World Cup for Women will be taken in the next two weeks, because in case there is any kind of requirement to postpone the tournament then undoubtedly we have to know that as soon as possible rather than at a later period and likewise if it is to go forward then we have to take an ultimate decision so that we can prepare all essential resources to run a first-class world event in the month of February.”
Although New Zealand is one of the least affected countries by the COVID-19 pandemic, necessary travel restrictions are there all around the world at that moment organizing the tournament is a big logistical challenge.
Also, Barclay wondered and said, “How do you travel all around the world with teams, they have to stay in other nations, and what are the propositions of that?”
He added, “Then getting them through the restrictions of COVID-19 quarantine that may be in place and obviously all those restrictions come with a cost and so there are monetary propositions heading into the month of February but all of those are surmountable.”
