The coronavirus outbreak has put the BCCI in some financial straits. After the Indian government has imposed restrictions on foreign visas, it has always been challenging to host the IPL. The 13th edition of the IPL is scheduled to begin on March 29. However, the outbreak of the pandemic COVID-19 forced the BCCI to suspend the league’s start until April 15.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has revealed that the board will apply the wait and watch code policy regarding the league schedule and launch. But as the risk associated with the virus increases, there is the possibility of canceling the entire season. Despite talks about a short tournament, it has not even confirmed.
With all the speculation concerns associated with the IPL, the 2020 edition may be canceled if the governing body loses a large sum of money. However, the loss of broadcast revenues appears to be huge. The IPL is estimated to be worth $ 500 million if it canceled this season. With cases increasing and lack of improvement in the situation, this is likely to happen.
Disney-owned Star India IPL has broadcasted the rights. The company owns television and digital streaming rights for the league. The company expected to earn approximately 45 445 million. The amount is also in agreement with UK broadcaster Sky.
Besides, nuclear and title sponsorship deals that attract $ 81 million (INR 600 crore) are also out of BCCI’s hands. Haris Tawani, chairman of Neo Sports owner Nimbus Communication, told Business Today has viewed the matter. According to him, most IPL teams will be insured if the 13th edition is canceled.
