Fresh Travel Restrictions On Australians:
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has put out a travel advisory that states Australians not to travel abroad in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, which might put the Australian players’ participation in the Indian Premier League in danger.
The Prime Minister said,” Do not go overseas. That is very clear, that instruction. For those who are thinking of going overseas in the school holidays, don’t. Don’t go overseas”, during a press conference in the Australian capital Canberra.
The government also noted, ” If you do travel, get professional security advice. Your travel insurance policy might be void. The Australian Government may not be able to help you.”
This is an indefinite travel ban. Australian players are supposed to be in India to take part in the IPL which is expected to begin from April 15th.
At Least 17 Players Are Part Of IPL Teams:
However, there are doubts if this year’s IPL will happen or not. Even if it takes place the participation of Australian players is doubtful as there are reports that Cricket Australia might ask its players to forgo their IPL contracts due to coronavirus threat.
However, Chief Executive of CA Kevin Roberts clarified that they might advise the players on this matter but will not direct them officially and it’s up to them to make up their minds in this regard.
With the Australian government’s latest move to put restrictions on foreign travel of its citizens, the uncertainty surrounding the availability of the players has grown further.
Coronavirus pandemic has caused damage to the sports calendar this year, with many events canceled or postponed or played without an audience on the grounds.
Nearly 17 Australian players are due to appear in IPL. Incidentally, Australian pacer Pat Cummins is the highest-paid foreign player whose contract is worth 15 crore rupees with Kolkata.
Other top Australian players who the franchises will be keen for their appearance at IPL include David Warner, former captain Steven Smith and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.
