India will look for some more game time in the final game of Group A. Their match against Pakistan was called off after the completion of first innings. India will desperately seek an outing wherein their bowlers could have significant match practice. They couldn’t have asked for a better opposition than newcomers Nepal to test their bowlers.
Nepal showed plenty of promise in the first game against Pakistan. They were good in patches against a strong Pakistani outfit. Nepal will look to make the most of the exposure they will be getting from this tournament. It’s not everyday that they would lock horns with teams like India and Pakistan. The only concern in the game remains the weather. If weather permits a full game, it will be interesting to see how both the teams approach this match.
Is India battle ready?
Rohit Sharma looked in good touch so did Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli too albeit very briefly. The 3 batters were dismissed inside the first 10 overs, a problem that they have been grappling for quite sometime now. India will want their top-order batters to get under the groove especially someone like a Shubman Gill. He has cut a sorry figure post the IPL with extremely meagre returns.
Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya revived India’s flagging fortunes but no handy contributions arrived from the lower middle order. Their bowlers remained untested owing to the weather. With 2 of their 5 selected pacers returning after a year-long break, it is imperative that they have overs under their belt.
Can Nepal put on an improved show?
Nepal did well to pick the first four Pakistani wickets quite early. Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed then put on a clinical show to bat Nepal out of the contest. Similarly with the bat, their third wicket stand did try and put on an impressive partnership but there was nothing much on the either side of that. Nepal will look to improve upon these areas in the game against India.
We look at the IND vs NEP Player Battle:
#1 Virat Kohli vs Sandeep Lamichhane
The former Indian captain smashed a cover drive off just the second ball he faced in the game against Pakistan. But his tentativeness against Shaheen Afridi proved to be costly as he lost his off stump for just 4. Virat Kohli will be itching to spend a considerable amount of time at the crease against Nepal. But he will be tested against the wrist spin of Sandeep Lamichhane. He has struggled considerably since the 2019 ODI World Cup. It will be interesting to see how Kohli finds a way against this spin.
#2 Jasprit Bumrah vs Sompal Kami
The star Indian pacer will return to bowl in ODI cricket well over a year. Jasprit Bumrah put on a fine show in the Ireland series. But given that he has just bowled in T20 format so far, he will look for a long spell in ODI cricket. Sompal Kami was arguably Nepal’s best batter in the previous game. He was the only one who stood up against the scorching Pakistani attack. Kami will be Nepal’s best bet to counter Bumrah.
