There is a lot of buzz surrounding Rohit Sharma’s imminent captaincy takeover in limited-overs cricket. He will probably be appointed the captain post for white-ball format post the T20 World Cup 2021. Sharma is known to have excellent acumen. He has led Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL titles and has also won India multi-nation tournaments in Virat Kohli’s absence. Here are the list of players whose career might affected if Rohit becomes captain.
StumpsandBails looks at 5 players whose careers might be affected once Rohit Sharma takes over as the captain:
#5 Navdeep Saini
Whose career might affected if Rohit becomes captain. Gautam Gambhir was the one who brought Navdeep Saini into national reckoning. His pace and height caught everyone’s attention immediately. Saini was fast-tracked into the Indian team. He made a place for himself post the 2019 ODI World Cup. Saini did make an impression initially but soon started faltering. His fitness dropped considerably. He wasn’t able to land the ball on the same spot consistently. But Kohli persisted with him. Hence he finds himself in the scheme of things even now. But the same can’t be expected from Rohit Sharma.
#4 Prasidh Krishna
Prasidh Krishna is another tall lanky fast bowler from Karnataka. Krishna made waves when Kohli once openly acknowledged his skill. He played 3 ODIs against England. Kohli is a big fan of quality pace bowling. He built and talked up Krishna. But he has not walked the talk yet. He is still a work in progress and Sharma might not extend the olive branch to him.
#3 Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal flourished under Kohli in IPL. It was Kohli who brought Chahal into the Indian team. Chahal briefly succeeded in bamboozling the batsmen. But he was soon found out. Batsmen started attacking him and he had no answers to their approach. Chahal has seen quite a dip in form. Sharma might not show the same faith as Kohli did.
#2 Manish Pandey
Manish Pandey graduated from the Kohli batch of the U-19 2008 World Cup. He made his way into the Indian team post-2015. Pandey seemed to have confirmed his berth with a sizzling century in Sydney in 2016. But he has been consistently inconsistent. He has failed to cement his place in the team. Kohli still has shown a lot of belief in Pandey. But Sharma might not persist with Pandey.
#1 Umesh Yadav
Umesh Yadav has perennially been India’s fourth fast bowler. He has often played in the absence of leading bowlers. Yadav for all his skill and talent couldn’t really book a permanent spot in the squad. It was Kohli who never gave up on Yadav. For his credit, Umesh Yadav has been quite handy in Tests but his limited-overs performance have left much to be desired.
