We look at Top 5 Indian Batters To Reach 1000 ODI Runs Mark:
#5 Shreyas Iyer – 25 innings
He made his ODI Debut in 2017. Shreyas Iyer immediately made an impact with a dazzling 88 against Sri Lanka. He had to wait until the 2019 World Cup to find a spot in the side. Iyer is the ideal number 4 batter who likes to take on the spinners right from ball one. He can seamlessly switch gears from being an accumulator to an aggressor. Iyer is fifth fastest on the list of joining the 1,000 runs club in ODIs. He took 25 innings to reach the milestone.
#4 Navjot Singh Sidhu – 25 innings
He was one of India’s prominent ODI batsmen in the 90s. Navjot Singh Sidhu was known to dismiss spinners from his presence. He was one of the rare openers who was excellent against spin. Sidhu’s moment under the sun in ODIs came in the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal. He was awarded the player of the match against arch-rivals Pakistan in a tense game. Sidhu also needed 25 innings to reach the 1,000 runs mark in ODIs.
#3 Shikhar Dhawan – 24 innings
He made his debut in 2010 but was dismissed for a blob. It took him 3 years to make a comeback to the ODI side. Shikhar Dhawan had scored a Test century on debut. He struck 187 in his debut innings. This knock earned him a spot in India’s ODI setup. He smashed a century against South Africa in the Champions Trophy, 2013 sealing his spot as an opener. Dhawan was India’s backbone in the ODIs for almost a decade. He took 24 innings to reach 1,000 ODI runs. Much like his career, not many appreciated the great feat he achieved.
#2 Virat Kohli – 24 innings
There is hardly an argument that Virat Kohli is a certified legend in the format. Kohli has broken almost all possible ODI records in his 15-year career so far. He started his career in 2008 as an opener in the away series against Sri Lanka. Kohli scored his first century incidentally against Sri Lanka. He reached the 1,000 ODI run milestone also against Sri Lanka in June 2010. Kohli needed just 24 innings to set an Indian record that lasted close to 13 years.
#1 Shubman Gill – 19 innings
There was a lot of debate over India backing Shubman Gill over Ishan Kishan as an opener. Shubman Gill partnered with Rohit Sharma at the top in the series against Sri Lanka. He finished the series with a century in the final ODI. Gill continued his rich vein of form in the first game against New Zealand. He played a sublime knock scoring a brilliant double-century.
Gill scored more than half the team’s runs in his knock of 208. He broke multiple records during this innings. Gill became the youngest batsman to score a double hundred in ODIs. He also became the fastest Indian to reach the 1,000 runs mark in ODIs!
