The Indian team failed to qualify for knockouts in an ICC event for the first time since 2012. They looked jaded, out of depth in the most crucial opening games of the World Cup. But the writing was pretty much on the wall for the team as the squad selected didn’t inspire confidence. Here are 4 Players Who May Not Play In The T20 World Cup 2022
India did manage to swat opposition in their warmup games but came well short against Pakistan and New Zealand. There were a few questionable selections in the squad. They hardly inspired confidence. India might look beyond them come the next World Cup scheduled next year.
We look at 4 Players Who May Not Play In The T20 World Cup 2022
#4 Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy was expected to be India’s trump card in the T20 World Cup. His performance in the IPL was exhilarating. The Indian fans and the management expected him to carry over the same magic but he flattered to deceive.
It won’t be harsh to say that he was one of the biggest disappointments in India’s campaign. He hardly looked like picking a wicket against both Pakistan and New Zealand. His fitness is another matter of concern nor does he contribute with the bat. He might need to do something exceptional to stay in the reckoning.
#3 Rahul Chahar
Rahul Chahar was picked over the more experienced, Yuzvendra Chahal for the World Cup. The justification behind his selection was his ability to bowl quicker in the air. But his form dipped in IPL itself. Mumbai Indians dropped Chahar after a couple of bad games. He was low on confidence heading into the World Cup. Chahar looked out of sorts in the couple of games he played. His selection at this stage looks next to impossible.
#2 Mohammad Shami
Mohammad Shami delivered impact performances in the last 3 games of the group stage. But when it was expected of him to step up, Shami couldn’t deliver. He looked listless in the game against Pakistan. His T20 bowling credentials were never exceptional.
There were better alternatives in the form of Mohammad Siraj, Deepak Chahar, and Avesh Khan, but the team chose Shami. It looks highly unlikely that he will be selected for the T20 World Cup next year.
#1 Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya was expected to carry on the mantle of being a finisher with the bat. But Pandya couldn’t really justify the faith shown in him in crucial games. He didn’t bowl in the game against Pakistan restricting India’s bowling resources.
India have for far too long have continued to invest in Pandya. But the returns have been bare minimum, especially in the recent past. The emergence of players like Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Venkatesh Iyer has made Pandya’s future uncertain.
