Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were excluded from the IPL 2022 playoffs after losing for the 7th time versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Pune. The game did not go well for the defending champions since they were unable to work as a unit. Let look at Reason For CSK’s Seventh Loss
Reason For CSK’s Seventh Loss
MS Dhoni took over the captaincy following Ravindra Jadeja stepping down ahead of CSK’s match versus SRH, but considering the extent of the damage, it might’ve been too late. Despite losing to Faf du Plessis and the team, Dhoni turned up to discuss the factors for the defeat.
The veteran captain mentioned that their batsmanship disappointed them drop as they continued to lose wickets despite a strong beginning offered by Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Furthermore, Dhoni stressed the need for improved shot selection by batsmen, notably when the circumstance calls for it, instead of sticking with their desires. The Yellow Army was held to only 160 runs & dominated the game by 13 runs.
What let us down was the batsmanship: MS Dhoni
“We did well to restrict them to 170-odd runs. I felt in the later half it (the surface) could be better and we had to get off to a good start, everything was up to the mark and what let us down was the batsmanship. When you are chasing you know what is required and at times you have to curb your instinct and see what really the situation is demanding rather than playing your shots. The shot selection could have been better towards the end”, said MS Dhoni.
“We had a good start and had wickets in hand, the surface kept getting better but we lost wickets at regular intervals. We can look back at some of the shots, if we take care of those things.. chasing is about calculations and batting first is more about instinct”, added the 40 years old.
In conclusion, the Ranchi great believes that pursuing should be all about planning while batting initially is all about instincts. Therefore, a player must simply pick which approach to take the team forward at the midpoint. CSK dropped out of the playoff race as a result of the loss, whereas RCB surged to 4th place in the points standings.
“Ultimately as a batter or bowler you are in the middle and you have to decide, I don’t think that was a problem today. We need to keep looking about what went wrong, it is easy to get distracted with how many points you have, it is the mistakes and it is the process that matters rather than where you are positioned in the points table”, concluded MSD.
