Marcus Stoinis, who appeared to challenge the legitimacy of Mohammad Hasnain’s move during a match in the Hundred, won’t face any disciplinary repercussions. On Sunday night, during Southern Brave’s seven-wicket loss to Oval Invincibles, Stoinis, batting for Brave, was hurried by a short ball from Hasnain that was measured at 88 mph/142 kph and caught at mid-off.
Stoinis made a throwing motion as he walked back to the dugout to simulate a bowling motion. Dean Cosker, the match official, reportedly spoke with Stoinis but no formal charges of violating the ECB’s disciplinary rules would be brought against him.
Hasnain was barred from bowling for the duration of the BBL after umpires raised their hands, but he was allowed to resume in June after changing the way he bowled. Moises Henriques had also questioned the legitimacy of his behavior during that competition when he yelled, “great throw, mate,” after playing and missing.
In his first three games for the Invincibles, Hasnain has taken three wickets with an economy rate of 1.93 runs per delivery. In either of those three games, the umpires have not called his action.
The Australian cricketer received criticism from Pakistani cricket fans after accusing Mohammad Hasnain of throwing the ball. The incident happened at The Hundred during a match that the Oval Invincibles won by seven wickets over Southern Brave. Stoinis, who finished with a score of 37 from just 27 balls, was attempting to slog a short ball from Hasnain when he tumbled. But instead of making the intended connection, the ball soared into the air before England’s Will Jacks could make a legal catch at mid-off.
Stoinis claimed it was an illegal delivery and imitated the Pakistan pacer as he made his way back to the dugout, which ignited the dispute. However, Stoinis’ response didn’t sit well with the crowd, who yelled at the all-arounder to play the game and leave the officials to do their jobs.
Not only Stoinis, but several Australian cricketers have taken issue with Hasnain’s bowling motion. In the previous Big Bash League season, Moises Henriques had charged the pacer of doing the same. After a bouncer, Henriques called to Hasnain, “Nice throw, mate.”
With their third straight victory on Sunday, Invincibles are in a strong position to advance to the knockout rounds.
